Azuma and the deceased daughter he never knew he had meet briefly at the Gates after he's killed and she has become the Gatekeeper. Although she doesn't openly reveal who she is, she manages to convey his daughter's gratitude for loving her even through he never met her, and his body language indicates that he realizes the truth. Then he moves on.
Mai sacrifices her life to save her mother. At the gate, she asks to bring Katou along to heaven with her, despite the fact that he killed her.
