The sword fighting school where Sonja learns her skills is a surprisingly nurturing environment. Her final opponent is a Graceful Loser who only wishes to embrace her as a sister when she bests him (and is genuinely sad when she flinches away from male contact). And the Grandmaster has an almost grandfatherly concern for her.
Sonja: I don't hate all men, Grandmaster.
Grandmaster (chuckling): That would have been music to my ears thirty years ago.
A nice little CMOH happens when Sonja and Kalidor are having their little practice match. Tarn thinks she's in trouble and tries to rush in and rescue her, from freakin ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER. He fails of course, but his heart was in the right place.
Tarn: (to Sonja, while being held by the scruff by Kalidor) Are you alright?
There is a great moment near the end of the film. When Tarn volunteers to stay near the entrance as guard, which earns him encouragement from Sonja and Kalidor, but Falkon trumps both of them when he gives Tarn a smaller version of his bone war club; the look on his face is like a proud papa.
Comic
Red Sonja spends a massive amount of time trying to undo the damage she did to a young girl's life in "Birth of the She Devil" by tracking her down across multiple countries in hopes of rescuing her from slavers. She also makes her the queen of a kingdom but only after seeing that it's something she wants.
The comic also has Ozzyus on his own quest to be The Atoner because he was involved in the girl's slavery plus broke a young Sonja's trust. He proves willing to die (it doesn't take) in order to show he's changed.
