Heartwarming / Queer Eye (2018)

Go To

In General:

  • Many of the heroes featured on the show have met up and befriended each other after their episodes aired. Particularly heartwarming is Mama Tammye befriending Jess and Skyler, whose families rejected them for being lesbian and trans, respectively, and declaring them her honorary kids, and Mama Tammye meeting and befriending Yoko from the Japanese episodes.
  • The entire premise of the series. Five guys go around helping people genuinely better their lives, personally, professionally, and socially. It's never done in a condescending manner, and the Fab 5 never force a major change the hero wouldn't like.
  • Even when the Fab 5 get into serious discussions with other people, nobody ever raises their voice or verbally bashes the other person. A good example of this is in "Dega Don't", when Cory (who's a white police officer) and Karamo get into a serious, yet peaceful, conversation about Police Brutality incidents against innocent black people. Another good example is in "From Hunter to Huntee", when Tan (who Doesn't Like Guns) and Jody (who hunts regularly, owns several hunting rifles, has to carry a gun for her job as a federal prison guard, and believe guns are needed) have a peaceful discussion about gun control where they still respect each other's viewpoints and find some common ground note .
  • If Jonathan has a hair texture that he isn't familiar with using, he always brings in somebody who is familiar with it. For example, if somebody who has afro-textured hair wants African-styled braids or dreadlocks, Jonathan always brings in a local hairstylist who does have training and experience with those hairstyles.

Episode specific examples:

  • AJ, the hero of "To Gay or Not Too Gay," is a young Straight Gay man who's out to his close friends and even has a boyfriend, but is closeted at work and to his stepmother, Haide. One of his greatest regrets is not telling his father before he died, so the goal of the episode is to get him ready to come out to Haide. He does so by writing a letter to his late father, and reading it aloud to her. When he reads the words, "I am gay," Haide's expression shifts from one of surprise to happiness and pride in a matter of seconds, and when he finishes reading, she immediately embraces him and tells him she loves him. AJ apologizes for keeping it from her, but she assures him it's alright, and the two hold each other for awhile, both crying Tears of Joy. AJ then introduces her to his boyfriend.
    • One of the reasons why AJ wants to come out to Haide is because he and his boyfriend have been talking about starting a family, and AJ wants his stepmother to be a part of it.
  • In "Below Average Joe", Joe not only manages to ask his long-time friend out on a proper date, but they also seal it with a kiss afterwards. The Fab Five burst into cheer and applause.
  • "God Bless Gay":
    • When meeting her, the Fab Five ask what they should call her: Tammye or Miss Tammye. Her answer? "You call me Mama." Through the whole episode, her warm spirit and easy relationship with the Fab Five is just a sight to behold.
    • Mama Tammye admits to the Fab 5 that when her son, Myles, came out as gay, she wasn't accepting of it at first because she was raised to believe homosexuality was against God. However, when she was recovering from her battle with breast cancer, she had an epiphany that God and Jesus wouldn't want her to hate somebody for their sexual orientation, so she asked her son for forgiveness, and he gave it to her.
    • Karamo taking Myles to a gay and lesbian choir, because choir was Myles' life before he left church due to being gay.
    • Mama Tammye has some heartwarming and encouraging words to each of the Fab Five, highlighting what they each bring to the world (feeding people's souls with Antoni, bringing beauty with Tan, providing a positive role model to black and especially black LGBT youth for Karamo...).
    • Her dedication to the Fab 5 in the epilogue, which is also a plea to the congregation to love everybody unconditionally:
Mama Tammye: How can I say "I love God", but I cannot love the ones who are right there next to me? I would call myself a hypocrite.
  • "The Handyman Can": The Fab Five view Jason's "final results" as his friends and family bid him goodbye as he plans to move to Remo...only for the video to end with Jason not only changing his mind and staying, but the confirmation that him and Beth are together! Just like with Joe above, the Five break out into applause.
  • "Sky's the Limit":
    • The look on Skyler's face when he sees the results of his top surgery for the first time. The Fab Five are immediately moved by how joyful he looks.
    • Jonathan usually calls heroes, both male and female, "Queen", but he doesn't do that with Skyler because he wants to respect Skyler's gender.
    • Tan is very up-front with Skyler about not fully understanding transgender issues, and sincerely wants to learn. Skyler appreciates that he wants to educate himself, and they have an honest discussion about it.
    • Skyler reveals that he bought himself two suits, but when he went to get them tailored, he freaked out when he realized the tailor would have to get pretty touchy-feely with him (and thus would likely realize he's trans, which could potentially lead to harassment), and left. Tan's solution is to take him to a suit shop specifically run for and by queer and gender-nonconforming people, thus allowing Skyler to relax and get a suit he looks great in.
    • Karamo goes with Skyler to get the gender marker on his ID changed.
    • One of Skyler's biggest role models is Youtuber gay artist Todrick Hall, so Karamo arranges for him to show up at Skyler's townhouse during the "final results" video so he and Skyler can meet each other.
  • Bobby helping Jess, the star of "Black Girl Magic" reunite with her biological sister and niece. Jess revealed after her episode aired that she and her sister talk to each other every day. In the same episode, Karamo succeeds in letting her embrace her identity as a black lesbian woman.
  • The last episode of the first season sees the Fab Five work on Jeremy, a dedicated and kindhearted fireman, and all of them express their sincere thanks and gratitude to firefighters.
  • "Jones Bar-B-Q":
    • Izora nominates her mom (Deborah) and her aunt (Mary) for the show because they helped her pay for college with their barbeque shack and she wants to give back to them by having the Fab 5 help them.
    • Deborah has a missing front tooth because of a bike accident when she was a kid, and she's been hiding her smile because she doesn't want anybody to see that. So Tan and Jonathan bring her to a dentist to get a tooth implant. She starts crying Tears of Joy when she sees the end result.
    Debroah: I can smile again.
  • In "Baby on Board":
    • For Antoni's session with Tony, he brings Tony's six-year-old stepdaughter, Kairi, along for it because she's really into culinary arts, but Tony doesn't know how he can help encourage real-life cooking skills without the risk of her getting hurt. So Antoni decides to bring them to a commercial kitchen and has them make and decorate shortbread cookies together, hoping it can help Tony see ways for him to teach Kairi how to cook.
      • Kairi's reaction when Antoni explains what they're going to do is also both this and funny; she runs offscreen and screams happily.
    • Tony proposes to Bri at the baby shower, something that surprises even the Fab 5.
    • The QE Tip they usually have at the end of the episode is replaced with the birth announcement of the baby, Rowan. The statements below are dispersed with a video of Kairi walking into the hospital room and greeting her new sister by kissing her on the head.
Bobby: Rowan, you're such a lucky girl.
Antoni: You are not only blessed with a beautiful mother and father, you also have a gorgina sister. I hope that she feeds you many cookies when you are able to eat them.
Tan: Daddy did so much for you. He put himself out there for the whole world to criticize so he could be the best dad he could be for you. He's a good dad.
  • Season four starts with the Fab Five returning to Jonathan's birth town, with the nominee being Jonathan's old music teacher and one of the teachers who supported him throughout those rough years of being bullied for his orientation. Jonathan's glee at being at his old high school, and even joining in the cheerleader routine at the pep rally is a sight to behold.
    • After the brief cheerleader routine is done, the rest of the Fab 5 practically glomp Jonathan and tell him he's "still got it".
    • Near the end, Jonathan thanks Mrs. Dooley for all the support she gave him in high school, noting that it had saved his life. All boys are also very thankful to the great teachers in their lives and teachers in general.
  • In "Disabled But Not Really" Wesley shows the Fab Five around his bedroom. As he describes how he gets ready, Jonathan is playing with Wesley's daughter Neveah's hair in the bottom corner. They're not the focus of the shot at all (the only way to tell that Jonathan is there is by his sleeves) but it's just a sweet little moment of the group including the hero's family in a way that's comfortable for them.
  • In ”On Golden Kenny”, Jonathan and Antoni bring Kenny to an animal shelter so he can find a dog to share his house with, and he ends up getting a golden retriever. Kenny names him “Fab 5” in honor of the group that has helped him.
  • The goal of “A Decent Proposal” is for the hero, William, to propose to his live-in girlfriend Shannan. The way the Fab 5 helps him set up is they write, direct, and film a two-minute movie that mirrors a romantic comedy (Shannan's favorite film genre), and Karamo arranges for an outdoor amphitheater to film it before they air the scheduled movie. William takes Shannan to the amphitheater for a date with the picnic Antoni helped him prepare, then right before the short airs, he excuses himself to grab some drinks, but in reality, he’s putting on the tuxedo Tan got for him. Once the film ends, William rushes out and walks up to Shannan with the ring, who begins to cry Tears of Joy as she realizes what's going on:
William: Everything in my life has brought me to you. All my regrets, all my choices, and all my tears, and I wouldn't change a thing. And I'm ready for our next step to begin. I'm ready for us. (opens the engagement ring box) Shannan Ann Eller, will you marry me and be my wife?
Shannan: Yes! (Kisses him while the amphitheater crowd cheers.)
  • "Stoner Skates By":
    • The hero John is a single father to ten-year-old ice skater Lucy. Jonathan realizes how passionate Lucy is about skating... so he gets Michelle frickin' Kwan (the most decorated American figure skater) to come skate with Lucy and give her tips. The way Lucy's face lights up when she sees her will melt your heart, especially since she's a precocious Little Miss Snarker for most of the episode. Even John, who by his own admission knows nothing about skating, is delighted to see her, if only because his daughter is so happy. He's also glad to hear some of Kwan's pointers since now he knows what to watch for during Lucy's practices — meaning he can actually help her instead of just stay out of the way.
    • John opening up to Karamo, and later his amicable ex-wife Julie, about his depression.
    • At the top of the episode, John describes Lucy as his best friend and says, "Everything is a little better when Lucy's with me." D'awwwww.
  • In "Farm to Able", Matt's mother is the one who always cuts his hair, so for the haircutting part of the episode, Jonathan gives her a haircutting lesson she can continue to do so in the future.
  • "Preaching Out Loud" features Noah, an openly gay Lutheran pastor who grew up in a very strict and homophobic church. He wishes his church to be more inclusive for LBGT+ people and People of Color, bonds with Bobby over their similar childhoods and Bobby's bad experiences with church, apologizes to Bobby in the name of the institution, and even namedrops Bobby in his speech for the 125th anniversary of the church he is a pastor of.
    • Bobby for his part goes into the building (when he wouldn't set foot in the church of Mama Tammye), throws himself into the project, and does his best to help. He later tells Pastor Noah that if he and his partner ever decide to have kids, and if more churches were as open and as accepting and as loving like Noah's church, he'd be much more open to the idea of to bringing his kids to church than he had ever been since he was disowned by the homophobic Christian community he grew up in.
    • Karamo brings an openly gay Lutheran bishop and an openly trans Lutheran pastor to have a chat with Noah. During the conversation, Noah admits he feels he could have done more for the LGBTQ+ community, especially those who are Christian, if he came out sooner (he didn't come out until his thirties) and he feels ashamed for staying in the closet for as long as he did. He's asked by Megan if he would judge a member of his congregation for not being ready to come out until later in life, and he says no. Megan's reply? "So why do you tell yourself that, Child of God?" Noah is left choked up and admits he needed to hear that.
      • During the same conversation, Bishop Erwin tells Noah that he appreciates how his church is living up to the love and acceptance that Christianity is supposed to be, and Megan gifts Noah a stole that eleven different Lutheran LBGTQ+ pastors who have been ordained outside of the normal rules of the church because they were called to serve out of the closet.
  • "Groomer Has It" ends in a cute puppy fashion show and the crew even surprise the heroine of the episode with a full van kitted out to be her mobile grooming station/salon.
Bobby: Does she deserve this? Yes. Is it extra as hell? Absolutely. But what else would you expect from us?
  • "Silver Lining Sweeney" may have a huge dose of tearjerker since it's about a family where the patriarch has ALS, but the heroine Jennifer instantly bonds with Antoni when she reveals she's from a Polish family and they have an absolute blast making kielbasy and other Polish food like latkes (Antoni, excited for the opportunity, even says, beaming, that he feels they're doing their ancestors proud).
  • Despite everything she goes through in late 2020, when the Fab Five visit Terri again, she is so grateful for everything they've done for her – she even jokes that during an issue with her daughter, she yelled "KARAMO!" to try to bring some semblance of peace.
  • Even after their tearful reunion and a nice talk at her party, the bow on top of Angel's episode with her dad is that he goes to her gym and works out with her – keep in mind, Angel's dad is an accomplished athlete, and prior to her coming out, he bonded with his daughter (or, in his eyes, "son") through sports. Part of their healing journey is Angel reminding her father that she is still a devoted athlete, she is just a woman.
  • It's small, but all the efforts Jamie, the animal rescue owner, displays to help people with special needs at her establishment show that she is all about meeting people where they are and treating them with dignity. This includes her own son, who is autistic; she immediately senses that he's slightly uncomfortable and overstimulated and goes to comfort him and keep him calm while the Fab Five hang out in the kitchen.
  • Makoto's response to his wife, Yasuko, admitting that she loves him, but that she's worried that he regrets marrying her because she's not "a good wife":
Makoto: To be honest, I don't care about you being a good wife either. I am saved by the fact that you exist.
