  • Not in the film itself, but at the Academy Award ceremonies when Peter Finch won his posthumous Best Actor award. Paddy Chayefsky went on stage to accept the award, but then said that he didn't really understand why he should be accepting it, and instead asked Finch's widow Eletha to walk up and accept the award, which she did, giving a shaky, but heartfelt, speech. It looked spontaneous, but was actually planned by Chayefsky, who had unsuccessfully tried to convince that year's Oscar producer, William Friedkin, to just let Eletha Finch be the designated recipient. Chayefsky got the Academy to invite Eletha, but as far they knew, she would just stay in the audience.note
