Heartwarming / Mulan (2020)

Moment subpages are Spoilers Off. You Have Been Warned.

  • Mulan goes to warn the Captain about Bori Khan's attack on the Emperor, and advises him to send a small, well-trained force. The Captain sees no reason to believe a liar, and we get a familiar line (reworked for the Adaptation Name Changes)... from Honghui. "You would believe Hua Jun. Why not Hua Mulan?" Yao, Ling, Chien-Po, and Cricket all chime in that they believe Mulan, and for that show of brotherhood, the Captain allows them to be the small, well-trained force that will save the Emperor's life - with Mulan leading the charge.
  • The Hua family reunion is pure heartwarming. Mulan doesn't tell Xiu about what's happened at war until she has told Mulan about what's happened at home (Xiu's been matched to a very nice guy, too!); their mother breaks down sobbing out of relief that Mulan is alright; and Zhou is quick to quiet Mulan's concerns about his destroyed sword by assuring her that Mulan is more important to him than anything.
  • Speaking of swords, the Emperor sends an envoy to follow Mulan home, announce what honor she has brought to her family, and deliver her a new sword of her own. And it's not just a Replacement Goldfish for her father's sword, either, but a new sword meant for Mulan herself, and the three virtues being joined by a fourth on the other side of the blade - devotion to family.
  • Like Disney's previous Live-Action reworkings (particularly Maleficent and Cinderella (2015), which were not musical), the closing credits come with a new version of a song from the original animated version, namely the gorgeous and poignant "Reflection". Afterwards, rather than go for the Mood Whiplash by doing, say, "A Girl Worth Fighting For", we get a beautiful Chinese cover of "Reflection", just to maintain that encouraging mood. The fact it is sung by Liu Yifei, Mulan herself, also helps.
