Heartwarming / Komi Can't Communicate

• Tadano and Komi's first conversation is nothing but pure heartwarming. After using the class blackboard to explain how she can't talk to people, Komi apologises for directing so much negative attention from the class at Tadano and goes to leave. Tadano, in a simple act of kindness that ends up undoubtedly changing both of their lives for the better, stops her from leaving by asking her a question using the same blackboard. He strikes up a conversation and treats Komi-san like a normal girl, with the two of them eventually filling up the entire blackboard with their back and forth messages. The anime's music choice during the latter only adds to it, even to the point of invoking happy tears.
  • Tadano then asks a simple question, and with his answer does the one thing that the countless people who fawned over Komi's beauty were unable to do. The one thing Komi needs more than anything else.
    Tadano: "Komi-san, what's your dream?"
    Komi: "Having a hundred friends... please don't laugh."
    Tadano: "Okay, then, I'll be your first friend. And I'll help you get 99 more."
  • Even though the foreign language dubs dim the moment by adding necessary dialogue, Tadano says that Komi has cleared the air with him about their earlier interactions. He also reacts to her admitting her dream by saying he loves the idea.
• Through Tadano's help and the fact that she, through complete oblivious accident, rescues Osana Najimi from a creepy admirer trying to assault them, Komi-san completely dashes away the wrong impression Najimi has of her. The excited hop Komi does as she realizes she's gained her second friend is just pure fanservice for the soul.
• A short chapter shows Komi in bed quietly being on the verge of an anxiety attack as she thinks about all the nerve-wracking events of the day. But how does she calm down? Remembering Tadano being there to help her out. She relaxes enough to go to sleep in peace.
  • Another has Komi unable to go to school due to a typhoon hitting the area; initially comforted by her mom due to the intensity of the storm, she then takes a call from Tadano, who gently asks how she's doing. Komi then asks him to stay on the line and talk more, which Tadano readily agrees to.
• Komi and Tadano’s conversation after Tadano was abducted by Yamai. Komi wonders if being friends with Tadano is a good thing after finding out Yamai kidnapped him because she was jealous of his friendship with Komi. In response, he tells her that he will choose who he is friends with, which is what she said to Yamai when she admitted her reason for kidnapping Tadano. Komi responds by telling him verbally that she would like to be friends with him still.
• While going to the library, Komi accidentally scares a baby with her stare, but then she only needs to smile at him and he stops crying. The baby even waves goodbye at her while being carried off by his mom.
  • Even better; when they go distribute flyers for the school festival, they just happen to ring the bell on the home of the same woman, who's carrying the baby right then. The second the baby spots Komi, not only does he stop crying, but he recognizes her and happily starts calling her "Cocco".
• Komi being the only person that the cat cafe's "boss cat" Chocolat will seek affection from. As she holds her, Komi lets out a small, contented, "Nyaaa~".
• At the karaoke after party for the first year's Culture Festival, Tadano thinks to himself how despite having had no expectations regarding their reaction, the fact that no one seems to be paying attention to him singing still hurts. Cue him noticing Komi watching with rapt attention, shaking a pair of maracas to add to the song and Tadano putting all his heart into it in turn.
• Tadano's friendship with his new classmates starting in the second year of the manga. Unlike a majority of his previous classmates who only tolerated him because he's friends with Komi, his new friends genuinely do like him. This gets best exemplified in chapter 256; Tadano is forced by their homeroom teacher to sit in on the various parent-teacher conferences for each of his classmates. Tadano gives heartwarming and thorough praise of each and everyone of his classmates' strengths to their parents and the chapter ends with all of his classmates completely starstruck at what Tadano did for them.
• When youngster Rei has to stay with Komi's family due to her parents travelling, Tadano and Najimi visit and are quick to connect with her, despite Rei's repeated insistences that she doesn't like the things they're proposing and that she hates Najimi. When she runs away from Komi while out shopping, Najimi uses their network of friends to track her down - an act of kindness that may seem out of place for them.
• For all of her creepy Yandere moments, Yamai does have multiple Pet the Dog moments as well. Most notably helping Nakanaka make friends during 2nd year (and later on helping her friends with their band) and buying Komi a brand new swimsuit when she notices all Komi has is her school-issued swimsuit and she doesn't want Komi to embarrass herself. And when Nakanaka forgets her souvenir sword at the train station, she makes it a point to ask if the train station mailed it to her, while couching it as an insult of course because of their Vitriolic Best Buds status.
• After Manbagi's I Want My Beloved to Be Happy moment, Kyouko comes in and gives her a Cooldown Hug. It's a very sweet moment especially since it's Kyouko, someone who is very adverse to physical contact, who gave her a hug.
• Chapter 228: Komi and Manbagi constantly praise each other when either of them won't back down about the fact that Manbagi would disregard her feeling for Tadano out of consideration for Komi.
  Manbagi: How am I supposed to win against a beauty like you~?
  Komi: You're a lot prettier than me.
  Manbagi: No way~.
  Komi: Yes way.
  Komi: You're pretty, and cheerful, and fun to be around.
  Manbagi: ...!
  Manbagi: Well, you're also pretty, and smart, and your cooking rocks!
  Komi: ...!
  Manbagi: That's why I'm going to give up~...
  Komi: You can't.
  • Also quite compelling is Komi's explanations of exactly why she thinks Tadano is cool, which is largely his compassionate and caring side, usually displayed entirely naturally; Manbagi - after some denial - concurs.
• In chapter 304, it's the morning following the whole rush of Valentine's Day, and Tadano pays Manbagi a visit so he can properly apologise for turning her down right after accepting her Love Confession, along with everything that led up to that moment. Manbagi happily forgives him, reminding him that he agreed to stop acting so formal around her, and semi-jokingly offers to slap him in the face so that they can put any feelings of guilt behind them and call it even, which he actually agrees to. She then tells him to go and make Komi happy. Even with the rejection, their friendship is going to quickly recover.
• Chapter 313, after Manbagi accidentally reveals to her family that Shoko and Tadano are going out, she seeks reassurance that things are okay by asking Shoko how much she loves her. Komi holds her hands out wide. Then she asks how much she loves Tadano. Komi starts out with her hands close together, and while dying with embarrassment, extends them out as far as she can.
• Chapter 317, although it starts off getting Played for Laughs, with Komi's father hijacking Komi's date with Tadano to test if he's worthy of his daughter. Over the course of the date, he slowly gets "seduced" by Tadano because he's just that nice of a guy. Bonus points where, during their date to the Aquarium where Masayoshi rattles off numerous facts about aquatic life before getting mortified when he realizes that he's weirding Tadano out, only for Tadano to express legitimate interest. And the date concludes with Tadano promising that he wants to be a good boyfriend to Komi, and Masayoshi giving him his blessing.
  • Doubly heartwarming as an earlier chapter showed Masayoshi was seemingly concerned about how well he was still connecting with his son, in particular.
• Chapter 348: Komi invites Tadano to look at a university in Shibuya that she wanted to look at. When pressed after the visit as to why she wanted to see that university in particular, she admits that she didn't have a reason for this location in particular - she just wanted to spend time with Tadano and figured that visiting a university would be a worthwhile use of time he'd been using to study. Tadano is so overcome with emotion that he almost hugs her (but ends up hugging a tree instead), before admitting that he'd been pushing himself harder so he would be able to attend the same university as Komi. Tadano admits that he's started working harder because he wants to be around Komi as much as he can, and his perfectly average grades wouldn't be good enough for that. 28 chapters later, he achieves rank 49 of 150 in the class test scores, breaking out of his status as the perfectly average student because he finally has a reason to push himself.
  Komi: Well... you were studying during Golden Week... and so was I... because... entrance exams are coming up... and I didn't want to interrupt... so... um...
  Komi: ... I thought this was a good way... to spend time with you. S-sorry.
  Tadano: (Throwing his arms up in preparation to hug her, before losing his nerve with his arms up.) Th-thanks for being so considerate. I wanted to see you too. I'm sorry... if it seemed like I was prioritizing studying too much.
  Komi: ...!
  Tadano: I've been studying hard in hopes of attending the same university as you. We each have our own interests... but... I thought we might plan together. I want to be close to you... for a long time.
• Chapter 349: After spending the day at a university in Shibuya during Golden Week, Komi and Tadano find themselves stuck in yet another rain storm, heavy enough to delay train services. Komi's outfit ends up drenched, so Tadano gives her his coat and suggests they go somewhere to dry off and warm up. They end up in a rented room at a manga and computer cafe. Lying next to each other, hand-in-hand, talking about their plans for the future, Komi opens up about everything she likes about Tadano, who reciprocates telling her everything he likes about her (until she begins tickling his nose with her hair, causing him to sneeze).
  Komi: Tadano?
  Tadano: Uh... yes?
  Komi: I like... your face. And your personality and everything else.
  Tadano: W-W-WAH?! Th-that caught me totally off guard! B-but I like every part of you too!
• Chapter 373: It starts with Tadano coming over for a study session with Komi. Her parents decide to dress their best for him, showing how much they enjoy Tadano's company. And even though Tadano has met them several times, his mother insists that he reintroduce himself as Komi's boyfriend. His reintroduction is so nice and sweet it causes the whole family to blush.
  • Later in the same chapter, Komi's mom tells Tadano how much Komi has changed and opened up because he was her first friend and thanks him, causing Tadano to become misty eyed.
• Chapter 375: As Tadano and Komi are hugging tightly in her room, he feels her warmth and heartbeat against him, and mentally tells her that he loves her. With emotions heavy in the room, the two are about to kiss... right as Shuuko opens the door and invites Tadano to stay for dinner.
• Chapter 411: Komi and Tadano get stuck in the rain and, swept up in a moment of laughter at the situation and sheer pleasure in each other's company, finally lean in for The Big Damn Kiss. Veers into Funny when this awakens Komi's thirsty side, and she enthusiastically pins Tadano down for more. Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink...
• Chapter 432: Tadano asks Komi get some rest, and in response Komi emphatically asks/demands to rest her head on Tadano's lap, that "only this will work". He sits on her bed and she falls right to sleep, so deeply in fact that her mom coming in and shouting excitedly about what they're doing in the dark doesn't wake her. Before all this, giving/getting a hug is shown as something of a cute ritual Komi and Tadano have whenever they get to be alone.
• Chapter 433 features Tadano and Manbagi (with Komi's permission) going on a date for the day. Why? She's still unsure of what answer to give Wakai regarding his confession, and so wants to see just what state her feelings for Tadano are right now before she decides anything else. After spending a fun day together and the two praising how they make each other feel even as Tadano reiterates his commitment to Komi, she realizes she indeed now likes Tadano as a friend only. The two give a friendly bow to each other, Manbagi now truly ready to move on.
  Tadano: Thank you for liking me.
  Manbagi: I'm glad I did.
