- In general, Dave Schultz is portrayed as just a really caring individual. He's supportive of his brother at every turn, is a dedicated father and husband, and he often addresses John in a courteous manner (even if he appears to hold some distaste for the man, as shown in the scene where he has to speak before a documentary crew). When John shoots him at the film's end, it's a pretty heartbreaking thing.
- Dave helping Mark to train (and lose 12 pounds) when the latter screws up in a match halfway through the film is pretty heartfelt, and also the part where the two forge a reconnection.
