Heartwarming / Ernest et Célestine

Go To

It's against wiki rules to say "the whole thing," so we'll have to list the highlights here...

  • Ernest comforting Celestine after her nightmare. She was crying and wrestling in her sleep, implying that the bear, who had previously ordered her to stay in the cellar and out of his way, came rushing to her aid the second he heard her.
  • Ernest finds Celestine's portrait of him... and he loves it. He reveals that he wanted to be an actor and musician, but was discouraged by his family, and entertains Celestine with impressions and dancing. He then frames her portrait and sets up a place in his living area for her to paint.
  • By the time of mid-winter, Celestine has drawn dozens of portraits of Ernest with his warm encouragement.
  • When spring rolls around, Celestine has gone from sleeping in a hammock in the cellar to sleeping in a smaller bed next to Ernest's... with an even smaller bed next to hers for her doll! Awwwwww!
  • The pair getting captured and tried separately leads to several heartwarming moments:
    • Both refuse to give up the other's location to the court, even knowing they'll be punished for their defiance.
    • Ernest is steadfast in his insistence that Celestine did nothing wrong; he doesn't even think of defending himself. Celestine, meanwhile, points out that Ernest was starving and had no way to buy food for himself—he wasn't a thief because he was a bad person, but because he had to be.
    • Both put themselves at risk to save the magistrates from the flames, even when everyone else runs away in fear. Ernest even tries to persuade the cops to go back to help the judge. The bear judge carries Celestine out, cradling her like a baby, clearly ashamed of himself when he realizes this mouse—this little girl whom he was trying to victimize—selflessly risked her life to help him, while his own people abandoned him.
    • When all is said and done and the duo are let go, they are asked what they want. Both answer that they just want to find the other, go home, and live out the rest of their days together. And they do.
