  • Okay, so Aya disguises herself as a human to sell her Bunbunmaru newspaper in the village, and in the Chapters she first shows up in, she starts an edition specifically for the humans in the village. The problem? She explicitly calls it the "Human Village Edition". Like, does no one find that a little suspicious? Wouldn't that imply the existence of an edition not meant for humans? You'd think at least a few villagers would realize that and start asking some difficult questions. Do they know the Bunbunmaru is run by a youkai, just not who? And if they do, wouldn't they question why a youkai newspaper is publishing an edition specifically for humans? Do they just not care? I don't know if it's Aya or the villagers, but someone is definitely holding the Idiot Ball here.
    • while there may only be one village with humans there are plenty of other places humans(and other non yokai like fairys and gods) live, the shrines, the forest of magic, scarlet devil mansion ect
  • ...what exactly does it mean to have influence over the Human Village? It is just being able to come and go without needing a disguise, or is it deeper than that?
  • In one of the later chapters, Mamizou approaches Akyuu (in disguise) with the purpose of having her publish stories of tanuki meant to endear the humans to them. ...why? If tanuki are youkai, and youkai are born from fear, why is Mamizou now trying to get the human villagers to think "you know, these tanuki might be cool people after all" by having Akyuu publish borderline pro-tanuki propaganda? What's the endgame here? Her Inner Monologue says it's so tanuki can "come and go as [they] please", but it can't be that simple, can't it? Furthermore, what is that even supposed to mean?

Moreover, according to Akyuu's conversation with Reimu, the tengu have been doing this as well for who knows how long. What is the goal in youkai making themselves more appealing to humans? Are they really just sick of having to disguise themselves every time they go to the village, or is it something deeper? I honestly do not get it.
    • Youkai are generalized as being dependent on antagonizing humans (or maintaining some sort of system of antagonization), but it's implied that what this exactly means varies across species— Kogasa pretty much sustains herself purely off surprise, for instance. Nemuno and the other yamanbas, for whatever reason, are explicitly stated to go out of their way to care for human children. Tengu and tanuki, in actual historical legends, are sometimes presented as mischievous, but sometimes fairly co-operative figures. On ZUN's part, the friendliness of these particular types of youkai is probably in reference to that— In-universe, it might be that still having a sense of co-operation (while still being "scary" youkai to some degree) is integral to continued existence.

    • fear and love are not mutually exclusive, just look at many religions, they love and respect there god(s) yet those same people still call themselves "God-fearing", being friendly means that humans wont be hostile and they can coexist, but they can still make the humans fear that peace being broken and drawing the tanukis anger
