Headscratchers / Takin' Over the Asylum

Go To

  • Eddie is sacked for misconduct in Episode 6 so, under the UK rules in force in 1994, will be barred from drawing state benefits for 26 weeks. He gave all his savings to his grandmother to allow her to return to Lithuania, so he'll have no money at all to pay rent or eat. His grandmother appears to be his only relative who he's in touch with, so who's going to save him from homelessness and starvation?
    • This isn't a headscratcher because it probably wasn't a mistake on the part of the writers. Rather, Eddie's fate is deliberately left uncertain as part of the series' Bittersweet Ending. None of the characters face a certain future at the end of the series - and that includes Eddie. The writers probably didn't want to leave viewers feeling too comfortable at the end of a series that was determined all the way through to confront social issues honestly. That all said, Francine might be getting out soon and will presumably be entitled to claim disability benefits and to housing. It won't be much money but they will be able to survive. If worst comes to worst he could sell his record collection.
