Headscratchers / Spider-Man: Reign

Go To

  • What happened with the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men or even the Punisher? The story depicts Spider-Man as the sole hero of New York City, but all these heroes are settled and/or often around the city! More than that, the Avengers Mansion and the Baxter Building are even there! How was Mayor Waters able to rule New York City with the Reign without facing opposition from all of these heroes?
    • One of the nigh-universal things about heroes is that they act in the name of law and order. With a crackdown that apprehends and shuts away all the super villains, the heroes in better standing might well decide that they're no longer needed, which covers most of the mentioned heroes. I imagine those like Thing, Wolverine, and so on who would know the creep of fascism when they see it, may have left New York when they still could, possibly figuring that the non-supers would be safe overall if the heroes weren't there, or possibly running a long plan to free New York. As for Punisher, while he is a one-man army, he is just one man, and not a super-powered one at that, so he could well have been imprisoned like Kingpin, or killed. Also it's worth noting that Spider-Man is generally one of the younger heroes, and if he's in his 80s here, it's entirely reasonable to assume that most or even nearly all of the other supers are dead. Wolverine, Ben Grimm, and maybe Banner and Thor might well be the only contemporaries of Peter still alive, and all easily might have just left for their own reasons—assuming they weren't also killed or imprisoned like Kingpin.
  • How durable is J. Jonah Jameson? His appearance seems to indicate that he is either in his late 80s or in his early 90s, but he is constantly beaten up very badly by the Reign officers and gets even punched on the face by Spider-Man. Shouldn't all those attacks kill a man of his age?
    • A reasonable question with the Reign troops, but at least Spider-Man may well have pulled his punch to not seriously hurt Jonah.
  • Are there any reasons why it was decided to not include the Vulture as part of the Sinner Six? He has been a member of the Sinister Six since its creation, but here he's replaced by Scorpion.
    • In most iterations, The Vulture is already an old man when he becomes a villain, and so in the sixty-ish years that have passed, he may simply have died of old age without the opportunity to drain youth.
  • Why did Doctor Octopus give the command to his tentacles to take Spider-Man to Mary Jane Watson's tombstone in case he died if he is, well, his enemy? Shouldn't his final command to his tentacles have been "Kill Spider-Man!"?
    • Doc Ock and Spider-Man frequently have a complex relationship, and even in this the recording he left refers to Peter as his brother. They are ideologically opposed, but relate to one another a lot. In fact, Doc Ock Heel-Face Turns seem to be a common enough theme.
  • If Spidey's semen is radioactive and ends up killing Mary Jane, does this mean that the Mary Jane from the mainstream Marvel universe, along with other MJs across the multiverse, can get sick and die due to Peter's fluids? Some universes depict Peter and Mary Jane having kids. By the way, why didn’t Peter and Mary Jane have children in this universe?
    • In some continuities, the spider that bit Peter isn't radioactive, so at least in those continuities, MJ should be safe from this particular danger. In other continuities, so far as I'm aware, radiation doesn't work that way. It's somewhat fair to say that in this particular continuity, the radioactive spider did work that way, making Peter himself actively radioactive, but otherwise, there's no reason to assume similar might happen in others, until a writer decides to say it did. As for why Reign's Peter and MJ didn't have kids, it is reasonable to suppose that exposure to radiation sterilized Peter, or otherwise affected his fertility such that he could not have children. Even if his fertility wasn't affected, his poisonousness to MJ could well have sterilized her.
