  • What would've happened if the LeDomases had killed Grace (or one of the other "tributes") during the game instead of keeping her alive long enough to perform the ritual? Would they still have suffered Mr. LeBail's wrath?
    • That seems to be the case, or at least the LeDomases think it to be the case. They are all trying to nonlethally subdue Grace so they can take her back for the ritual alive. If a tribute is killed without the ritual being actually performed, that would probably count as violating the terms of the contract.
  • Why didn't Alex believe in the curse? He knew that at least part of it was true (that if you refuse to play, the bride and groom both die, and he had a dead cousin as proof of this). So why didn't he believe until the end that the whole family would die if they didn't kill Grace?
    • He didn't want to believe that, because he genuinely cared for Grace right up until Grace killed his mother. It was more comforting to believe that his family was all into some crazy bullshit.
    • The cousin and cousin-in-law probably died in a car crash or something, not by exploding in a bloody mess. Something that would've been Le Bail's doing, but could also be written off as just a coincidence by the doubtful.
  • If they know that they risk either being forced to commit murder or the entire family dying every time someone gets married, why marry anyone? Civil unions are a thing now and it’s more acceptable nowadays without marriage being involved. They could just live together as partners and nix the marriage aspect altogether.
    • They regard themselves as bound by at least some/most of their family traditions. Even if they decided to simply opt out of the terms of the deal, there's no guarantee that if they go a generation without an official marriage, they won't simply all explode.
