Headscratchers / Ratchet & Clank (2002)

  • There's no reason for Drek to be so suspicious of one little ship leaving Veldin while observing the planet from orbit as to sic his elite forces on it. He sees a perfectly innocuous, random ship leave the planet and immediately suspects it could be bad enough that his right-hand man needs to stop it? Why? How does Drek seem to know what the duo's plan is? It makes no sense.
    • A lot of the story flaws like this can be chalked up to the way the story for the game was written and made. It was not planned out in a point A to point B way and there was no long term plans or set lore for the series, it was just whittled down in a way that only made it seem like it was cohesively planned. If you listen to some of Mike Stout's youtube developer commentaries as well as an interview with Insomniac, the original game (and the other three games) didn't have a professional writer on board. They were just making up the whole thing as they went. For example, the prologue for the game was one of the last parts made for the story, and it was done so late that they didn't have time to add dialogue to it. And as for Drek, its possible he knew about the defective robot escaping Quartu (since it was urgent enough to have his own robots chase it down all the way to Veldin), deduced that the robot, being intended as one of his own footsoldiers, knew about his plans and probably put two and two together that Clank was on board the ship, but figured either Qwark would be good enough to do the job or his own forces invading other worlds like Novalis would do the job for him.
  • While the construction of Drek's World has caused a great deal of harm, isn't destroying it at the end a bit of a waste?
    • Good point. Ratchet and Clank probably blew it up as payback for him destroying so many planets to begin with, but a lot of people, both the Blarg themselves and the people who lost their homes to Drek's scheme, could have used a new place to live.
