- The film and book mention many times that if he had told someone where he was going he might’ve been rescued. However the area where he was is extremely vast and isolated. Having fallen down into a very narrow slot canyon the odds of a rescue crew finding him would’ve been very slim. Likewise there is no way he would’ve gotten cell reception there in 2003. It is however a very good Aesop about the dangers of going to isolated locations alone.
