Headscratchers / Little Misfortune

Go To

  • The clerk at the zoo. Misfortune has the opportunity to lie to him to gain access. As well as the crow headed janitor. Both of them see and react to Misfortune as though she is alive, which is a very big plot hole if she's already dead at this point.
    • The janitor at least is clearly associated with Morgo, being that it has a crow for a head and all, so it would make sense that it sees and reacts to Misfortune. The clerk may potentially be some clever misleading on Morgo's part; the clerk never actually reacts to Misfortune or spares her a glance. If you throw the stone, he goes to check out the damage, and if you tell him a lie, he goes outside and does... nothing, even when he should have clearly seen the lie for what it was—it's possible that he went out for a break and just happened to do it when Misfortune told her lie. Alternatively, Morgo can affect the real world even if only in small actions like busting up the lamp. It's possible he did something to get the clerk's attention.
    • Entering the zoo being an issue stands out as unusual in general. It's the first and only time that Morgo doesn't just hand Misfortune the item she needs to progress. Contrast this with the fact that when she later needs a ticket for Phantasmagoria (and wants a balloon), he goes right back to his previous habit of spawning things in.
      • Maybe he just wanted to see how clever his new forever playmate was?
  • So, who exactly is the player? Mr Voice can talk to the player and even mentions the screen between them - but does the player have some place in the Misfortune's story from the in-universe POV?
  • If Mrs. Hernandez did not want her daughter why didn't she give her to a adoption agency?
    • Giving a child up for adoption is a rather complex procedure - you don't just drop the kid off and say "Make him/her someone else's problem."
    • I know its complex but just because something is complex doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be done.
      • Take into account what her parents are like. It's also not impossible that they simply didn't think of it.
    • The exact same reasons plenty of Real Life cruddy parents don't just give up their neglected kids for adoption: societal pressures to keep families together, disagreement between the parents of what to do, simple parental obligation towards their kid despite not loving them, lack of assurance that the kid won't just be neglected or abused somewhere else, guilt of abandoning their child even if it's justified. Misfortune's parents aren't good, but that doesn't mean that any of these things wouldn't get in the way of them giving her up to the system. We don't get much insight into why Misfortune's parents keep her, so it's possibly one of these reasons.
    • Also, considering that Mrs. Hernandez wanted to get an abortion but couldn't, laws surrounding childcare could be quite different in their town, making it a lot more difficult.
  • What does Mr Voice do with the children who can't hear him? They make it clear that Misfortune is the only one who can hear him, and he's surprised by this. But the games he plays wouldn't work with children who can't hear him.
    • Given that he can impact the real world, he may leave notes for them to pick up. Alternately, he may simply be surprised that Misfortune can hear him speaking to the player. That's the only time when he says anything that she shouldn't hear, after all.
