• They couldn't have signaled SOS with the flashlights on their phones? Maybe after breaking the red signal light, so everyone would notice?
  • Flashlight beams don't carry all that far. Blocking the red light in an SOS pattern might've been more effective, provided they could jury-rig a way to do it.
  • Breaking the light alone would have summoned someone... eventually. According to FAA regulations warning lights like the one on the tower must be verified to be working at minimum every 24 hours and repaired within 15 days if broken.
  • As for the phone flashlight, the light would probably be visible if aimed at the diner or another place where people are. Flashlight beams don't carry far if the goal is for the holder to illuminate things, but they can be seen very far by others as a point of light against a dark backdrop like the night sky. It's a good idea for outdoor adventurers to install an app for sending an SOS via flashlight.
• Why would someone with an RV need to steal a truck?
  • not everyone who steals does so because they need to, sometimes they steal simply because they can. And the RV could very well be stolen too.
  • They were likely going to sell it for easy money.
