• How exactly does Applegate manage to convince anyone that Joe is Shifty McCoy? Van Buren specifically says that he remembers seeing Shifty's picture in the paper, so shouldn't the fact that Joe doesn't look like him clear everything up immediately?
  • Applegate is the Devil — the ultimate manipulative liar and trickster, who turned an old man young and an ugly woman pretty. Convincing people that Joe looks like a criminal is not out of the realm of possibility.
