Headscratchers / Charlie Chan

  • Is anyone else uncomfortable with the fact that Charlie refers to his kids by assigned numbers rather than by their actual names?
    • This is traditional in many Asian cultures where the number becomes part of the name. In some societies, children get their formal names when they're a bit older and are just referred to by nicknames before that. Brothers and sisters, cousins and other relatives refer to each other as da ge, big brother, ar ge, second brother, ar shuo second uncle, and so on. (Watch Mandarin dramas on youtube with this in mind.) Some Native American peoples also name their kids this way.
