  • After a bloody series of energy wars spearheaded by the rise and defeat of neo-fascist political groups who attempt to control the world's remaining energy supplies for the benefit of a select few, humanity discovers radical new sources of power. Among them is a tachyon generator which enables humanity to travel backwards in time, which is tightly regulated and kept top secret from the public in order to prevent abuse. A group of temporal anthropologists is formed to study culturally significant historical events, including Ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages and Nazi Germany. note  (Castle)

  • October 19: The command module of the Ares IV, containing the mission commander John Kelly, is engulfed by a graviton ellipse in orbit of Mars. The module is later discovered by the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager in 2376. (Star Trek: Voyager)

  • Project Gestalt is revealed to the public as a solution to the spread of White Chlorination Syndrome. Wealthy citizens are the first to undergo Gestaltization and are put into stasis, while androids supervise non-sentient Replicants who are tasked with battling the remaining Legion and cleansing the world of WCS.   • Summer: Kit Walker XIV takes on the role of the Phantom. (Phantom 2040)
  • September 8: The Yellowstone supervolcano on Datum Earth erupts after months of foreshadowing. The eruption lasts a full week. (The Long War)
  • December 26: Maximum Inc. begins forcefully taking over sections of Metropia, imprisoning humans and biots to be used for spare parts. The Phantom and his allies begin an all-out attack on Maximum operations.Justification . (Phantom 2040)

  • The UN Spacy holds the Supernova Project, a competition to determine the next-generation Variable Fighter, between Shinsei Industries' YF-19 "Alpha One" and General Galaxy's YF-21 "Omega One". Both planes are rejected in favor of the automated drone fighter Ghost X-9. However, "virtual idol" Sharon Apple develops a malicious consciousness and takes over the Ghost as well as the decommissioned SDF-1 Macross. The YF-19 and YF-21 pilots Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman put aside their mutual animosity to defeat Apple and the Ghost. (Macross Plus)

  • January 1:
    • X-COM is revived in order to fight underwater aliens that are terrorizing the world's shipping lanes and islands.   • The future looks a lot like three years from now. (Time Chasers)
    • As the result of time travel being used towards evil purposes, the future looks like a back alley in any major US city. (Time Chasers)
  • The Earth gate loses its lock on the gate headed towards Alpha Centauri. While reestablishing the lock, the scientists in charge of the project discover that the gate is randomly locking onto random locations throughout the galaxy. These locations are discovered to be jumpgates of alien origin. The Ancients take notice, and adjust their long-term plans according to their determination that humans are dangerously intelligent. They reconfigure the gate system to isolate humanity within a maze of sectors devoid of intelligent life. (X-Universe)
  • In the last two seconds of a basketball game between the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns, Charles Barkley performs a Chaos Dunk, killing nearly all in attendance. The ensuing Great B-Ball Purge sees most professional basketball players hunted down and slain, and the sport itself is banned. (Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden)
  • Spiked hair and acid-washed jeans are fashionable. Most of the top-selling songs are covers of 1980s pop music. Wade Watts discovers a hidden caravan in a junkyard which he uses as a hideout. (Ready Player One)
  • Rebecca Madison and Gorda attempt to seize control of Cyberville through the use of self-spreading nanobiots. The attack is defeated by the Phantom, and the 23rd Phantom's memories are uploaded to the Phantom Chronicles more . Rebecca Madison and Gorda are finally imprisoned, while Maxwell Madison Jr is placed in psychiatric care and Hubert Graft in rehabilitation. (Phantom 2040)


  • The last World Series, an annual baseball championship game, is played on Earth. Only 300 spectators attend the game, indicating the decline in the popularity of the sport has reached a critical point. The history of professional baseball effectively ends this year. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
  • RobCo Industries is founded by Robert House. With his technical genius and business acumen, it will become one of the world's most lucrative corporations. (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • As a goodwill gesture to their former mutant allies, GDI sends G-330X habitat modules to the borders of the Red Zones. (Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars)
  • Earth has few international political problems anymore, and environmental issues are slowly getting under control. Unmanned probes are sent through to the alien gates; results are promising but unsatisfying, since the probes aren't intelligent enough. The United Nations agrees to send a manned probe posthaste. Construction begins on the Winterblossom spacecraft the next year. (X-Universe)
  • The mysterious being known as "Grandmaster Meio" appears on Earth and, taking advantage of its war-torn state, takes over the Eastern side. Setting up in the capital city of St. Petersburg, he wages war in order to conquer the entire planet. (Strider)
  • James A. Corry kills someone in self-defense. Nevertheless, he is convicted of murder and sentenced to 50 years solitary confinement on an asteroid. (The Twilight Zone (1959))



  • March 8: Max Paradys and Albert Starski awaken from suspended animation, 50 years later than planned, to find that all men have died and the world is entirely populated by women. (Sex Mission)
  • Nuka-Cola is invented by John Caleb-Bradberton. (Fallout)
  • Charybdis destroyed by an unknown alien; Stephen Richey is the sole survivor. The aliens create an artificial environment for him, in which he lives until his death. (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
  • Pir-hana is formed from the merger of Brazilian companies Pir and Hana. more  (Wipeout)
  • John-Caleb Bradberton creates Nuka-Cola, which becomes an overnight success, despite the unhealthy content of the soda which contains 120% daily sugar in a single serving, and founds the Nuka-Cola Corporation. Only a handful of other soda brands manage to remain competitive or survive Bradbertons agressive business strategies, such as Sunset Sarsparilla and Vim!Pop. (Fallout 4)

  • Early January: 'Art3mis' works out the clue to the first key to James Halliday's fortune, but is unable to beat the challenge. (Ready Player One)
  • February 11, c 23:03: Wade Watts discovers the first key to James Halliday's fortune, sparking an upswing in interest. (Ready Player One)
  • February 12, just after midnight: 'Art3mis' unlocks the first key to James Halliday's fortune. (Ready Player One)
  • February 12, 04:00: Wade Watts unlocks the first gate to James Halliday's fortune. 'Artemis' succeeds a few hours later. (Ready Player One)
  • February 14: 'Aech' unlocks the copper key and completes the gate. (Ready Player One)

  • March 15: Frank Wood becomes the first American to walk on Mars (the Gap's version of Mars, that is). He is met there by Russians who had, unbeknownst to him, reached there years earlier. (The Long Mars)
  • April: IOI places 'Art3mis' under surveillance. (Ready Player One)
  • July: Wade Watts and 'Art3mis' attend Ogden Morrow's birthday party in OASIS. The party is attacked by Sixers looking to kill the two of them, but they are repelled by Morrow. Wade confesses his true feelings for 'Art3mis', who responds by breaking all contact with him. (Ready Player One)
  • August: 'Art3mis' locates the jade key, followed by 'Aech', Wade Watts, Nolan Sarrento, and 'Shoto'. 'Daito' is killed in-gamemore . Sixers and gunters converge on the planet housing the key, leading to a massive battle with casualties on both sides. The Sixers unlock the crystal key in short order and barricade its location when Wade also unlocks it, but they are unable to open the crystal gate. note . (Ready Player One)
  • Early September: Wade Watts tells 'Art3mis', 'Aech', and 'Shota' how to get the crystal key, then is deliberately taken prisoner by IOI. While on the inside, he manages to hack the system and acquire incriminating evidence as well as plant a script to disable the blockade around the crystal key. He then resets his identity back to his true self and escapes. (Ready Player One)
  • September: Battle of Castle Anorak. All gunters battle the Sixer army at Castle Anorak to allow the surviving members of the High Five access to the crystal door. more  (Ready Player One)
  • October 25: Creation of the android known as Es by the Mitsurugi Agency. She would eventually go on to become the guardian of the Azure. (XBlaze)

  • March 31, 2:03 PM: The zombie uprising cometh. (Homestar Runner)
  • November 3: A nuclear war wipes out humanity. The only known survivor is Aidan Hunter, who was in an underground bunker. (The Outer Limits (1995))
  • The UN Starship Lysithea leaves Earth with its support fleet to pursue Tarsian Invaders. (Voices of a Distant Star)
  • The Macross 7 colonization fleet makes peace with the Protodeviln thanks to the efforts of rock band Fire Bomber. (Macross 7)
  • The Winterblossom begins its manned exploration of the gate network. It returns two years later, having found dozens of alien jumpgates but no intelligent life. Many planets do appear suitable for colonization or terraforming, however. (X-Universe)
  • Hiryu's sister Mariya goes insane and murders several trainees. Hiryu is sent to stop her rampage, and eventually is forced to kill her in self-defense. Affected by her death, Hiryu becomes temporarily suicidal and six months later, abandons the Strider organization. (Strider Hiryu manga)
  • Delia Flaubert moves to the United States and founds Auricom Research Industries. (Wipeout)
  • James A. Corry, who is serving a sentence for murder on an asteroid, receives a robot named Alicia from Captain Allenby in order to combat his loneliness. (The Twilight Zone (1959))


  • December: In an effort to remember his past, Gilliam Seed becomes a J.U.N.K.E.R. - a person who hunts down "Snatchers," machines that kill and replace people.note  (Snatcher)
  • Event Horizon returns; rescue ship finds something evil aboard. (Event Horizon)
  • Kane reappears and begins the Third Tiberium War with a nuclear strike on the GDSS Philadelphia. Despite the loss of its orbital headquarters, GDI rallies and attacks Nod's Temple Prime. The resulting massive Tiberium explosion draws the interest of the alien Scrin, prompting an invasion that forces Nod and GDI to once again unite to survive. Kane seizes one of the alien Threshold Towers, and the Scrin are driven from Earth. (Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars)
  • The Hermosa Earthquake shakes the Western Coast of the United States. Parts of Los Angeles sink into the Pacific Ocean. The sunken areas would eventually become part of one of the world's largest coral reefs. (Star Trek: Voyager)

    • The Great War takes place. A first strike by an unknown party leads to a two-hour global thermonuclear bombardment. After years of drills and false alarms, few citizens pay heed to the air raid sirens. The death toll and environmental effects are cataclysmic. The Vaults are sealed. (Fallout)
    • A young family of three from Sanctuary Hills, Massachusetts are among the few admitted to nearby Vault 111, where they are led into "decontamination chambers" and cryogenically frozen. (Fallout 4)
    • Retired soldier and survivalist Randall Clark survives the war by pure luck, due to being on his way home from a hiking trip in Zion National Park when the war broke out. He's forced to euthanize an elderly couple who were blinded by the nuclear flash, and returns to Zion where he waits out the following months of fallout in an abandoned geological research station inside a cave.     • The Sierra Madre Casino security protocols activates, sealing the casino and all the visiting guests inside, including singer Vera Keyes and owner Frederick Sinclair. Vera commits suicide and Sinclair dies trying to disable the booby-trapped vault underneath the casino. The Sierra Madre remains sealed for 200 years, watched over by security holograms. The OCU denies any involvement and claims the USN/UCS staged the incident in order to justify a full scale occupation of Huffman. Diplomatic efforts to reconcile the two countries fail and the 2nd Huffman Conflict begins. (Front Mission 1 and Front Mission 5)
  • Establishment of the Orpheus Mining Colony on Luna. It is among the earliest Lunar colonies of humanity. (Star Trek: Enterprise)
