"We've been trying to reach you concerning your car's extended warranty!"note

With this game having the largest roster in a mainline King of Fighters title (and that's before DLC, mind you), and being the most cinematic entry in the series yet, expect the laughs to be plentiful as the abundance of newcomers!

Story Mode

  • Team Kim's ending: Kim's not-so-subtle attempts to ditch his master Gang Il and his master's girlfriend Luong are hilarious, even more so since it ends up having the opposite effect with the two deciding to remain at Kim's side for an indefinite period of time.
  • Team Mexico's ending: King of Dinosaurs debates with himself over what diet would be best for developing muscle as well as fitting his image as a dinosaur/role model for children, while a remix of Yuri's "Diet" from Art of Fighting 2 plays. He also admits that he skips leg day every now and then. Angel and Ramon then enter and begin petting King of Dinosaurs as if he were an overgrown puppy. For bonus points, King of Dinosaurs and Angel purr. Ramon even develops a new technique he names "Tiger Petting", which proves too vigorous for Dinosaur, who then roars and attempts to bite Ramon's head.
    • The special opening between King of Dinosaurs and Mian, where he mistakes her for "an assassin from ancient times to extinguish the dinosaurs" due to her Bian Lian mask. She is completely confused and concludes that he is simply an idiot...into which he doesn't take well.
  • In KOF '98, a glitch saw Leona's intros against Chang and Ralf swapped, thus having her salute a noted criminal while acting in disgust towards her own teammate. Not just content with leaving it so, SNK made it official by having Leona and Chang wordlessly salute each other for their special intro.
  • The special opening between Chin and Nakoruru. Chin, at first, declares Nakoruru to be a bit young, for her to point out, even before traveling through time, she's a bit older than he isnote , before referencing the fact that she knows someone who also drinks sake and is a great fighter.note
  • Mai and Mian's special opening. Mai at first mistakes Mian for some sort of cosplayer, then compares Bian Lian to Noh theater, at which point Mian declares that it is on!
  • Luong and Kim's special intro. Luong's innuendo laced dialog makes Kim feel very uncomfortable. Kim has to cut the conversation short by reminding Luong he has a wife and two children.
  • Newcomer Kukri spends most of his time trolling and insulting every other character in the game. His win quotes are hilariously crude and mean-spirited, with one even having him threaten to doxx his defeated opponent.
  • A small moment in Team Japan's ending where Kyo and Benimaru are flabbergasted that Daimon decided to wear Antonov's crazy-looking championship belt. Yes, the very same belt that Antonov hides his spare cigars in.
  • Team Women Fighters ending, again. The girls are celebrating their victory at the Pao Pao Cafe, with other non-evil female characters from different teams as well as former Women Fighters members like Yuri and Blue Mary joining them in celebration. King then tells Richard Meyer that she should get her food and drink on the house for winning the tournament, then the rest of the women hear "on the house" and start ordering more stuff. At this point he panics and asks Bob Wilson to call in Terry, Andy, and Ryo because he's worried that if he tries to stop this on his own, his bar will be wrecked. Once the boys arrive, however, the ladies are quick to tell them that the house is "generously" comping everyone tonight, which naturally leads to them placing huge orders and Kasumi and Ryo declaring an eating contest. Desperate to save the bar from financial ruin, Richard concludes that at a time like this, he must use Haoh Sho Ko Ken... only he can't, since that is a high-level Kyokugenryu technique.
  • Joe meets Billy Kane during the story mode.
Joe: You must be sweet Lilly's older brother!
  • Andy and Mai's special intro starts with Mai asking if Andy turned off the AC before they left. He didn't even touch it, which makes Mai fret, and want to hurry the fight along so she can look into it. Andy suggests that she'll be too distracted to fight at full force.
    • Continues into XV, where his "interview" on SNK's website reveals that he wants to use his tournament earnings to buy a new AC unit.
  • Zarina meets Nakoruru and introduces her toucan Coco as a bird that loves papaya. When Nakoruru responds that her Mamahaha's favorite food include frogs, rats, and hamsters, Zarina realizes to her horror that Mamahaha's a bird of prey. Then Nakoruru innocently adds that Mamahaha also hunts other birds like sparrows.
Zarina: (freaking out) Fly away! Coco!
  • King freaking out when Ryo asks her to come over with him.
Ryo: King! Come over here with me!
King: Huh!? What do you mean...by that?
King: Oh, Oohh, that's what you're talking about. Of course. You scared me for a moment...
Ryo: If I win I'm gonna take you on as a student, whether you like it or not.
King: I'll give it some thought, Mr.Sakazaki.
  • The special opening between Meitenkun and Vice. As Meitenkun sleeps, Vice attempts to wake him up by telling him that the match is about to start. She succeeds...only for him to fall asleep again. She doesn't take it very well.
    Meitenkun: Zzzzz... (snoring)
Vice: ...Yo, brat. The match is starting. You gonna wake up soon?
    Meitenkun: ...Oh.
Vice: Finally awake now? Alright, let's go ahead and start.
    Meitenkun: Zzz... Zzz... (snoring again)
  • In the Another World ending, Love Heart wants to go home, but Mui Mui and Nakoruru want to visit present-day China and Hokkaido, their respective homelands, to see how much they've changed since their time.
  • In the Art of Fighting Team ending, the team along with Takuma and Khushnood Butt are lounging in their new restaurant that Takuma owns. Takuma, Yuri and Robert enthusiastically talk about how their barbeque restaurant is going to be successful... much to Ryo's frustration (he wants to talk about nothing but training and fighting apparently). It ends with him telling Khushnood that he's going to leave to the Second Southtown (Garou: MOTW's city) with the latter agreeing.
  • In the South America team ending, Zarina managed to get herself the funds from Antonov... apparently after she kicked him in the groin. Bandeiras thinks that it's a dangerous ninpo.
    • Bandeiras' part of the ending is hilarious too. He declares that he's going to Japan where ninjas are still around and the place looks like old-timey Edo-era Japan, with Nelson warning him about getting weird looks from the people. Then Bandeiras went there, and is unsurprisingly puzzled at the modern Japanese city; he weirds out people when he asks them about Japan-y things, which ends up with him arrested by the local police (as Nelson warned).
  • The Villains team ending has them in Silk Road... somewhere. In the middle of a desert. With Xanadu putting up a fireplace for the team to sit in while he speaks about his nonsense again. Among the fireplace, apparently, is the bill check as their tournament prize. Choi tells Chang that they might need to run away from Xanadu soon, with Chang being weirded out by Xanadu too.
  • The ending of The Birds(?) Team has Nakoruru and Zarina following their pet birds marching in the same line as... King of Dinosaurs, who is visibly embarrassed. Which is in sharp contrast to how he was depicted as Tizoc in The Birds Team Ending of The King of Fighters XI. The baby blue-colored background and baby chicken pattern are the icing on the cake.

Gameplay

  • Yuri's command throw against Chang. Normally she delivers a series of slaps to the enemy's face, but due to Chang's huge size difference, she repeatedly slaps his man-boobs.
  • Despite his size, Chang's MAX Tekkyuu Dai Boushou beat the ever-loving crap out of his opponent a lot faster than he typically moves. Especially with how quickly he mashes the opponent like a deflated ragdoll.
  • Mian's MAX Rangurenbu has her deliver a very climactic and rapid No-Holds-Barred Beatdown before using her fan to finish them off with an anti-climactic bop to the head. The cute little noise she makes as she does it makes it that much funnier!
  • While many of the Climax Supers are stellar in their own right, there are others that elicit a chuckle, be it intentionally or otherwise.
    • Let's face it: Angel is sexy and she damn well knows it. So what better way to flaunt that than by weaponizing her massive cleavage? For bonus points, have her do it against Kula and just try not to laugh thinking about how she'd react canonically to her doing so!
    • Antonov's Climax Super, if it connects, has him spit out his cigar and drive his opponent into the ground with his fist. The camera then immediately smash cuts to him standing, an extreme close-up of his championship belt, which is revealed to be a cigar case. He pulls out a spare cigar, lights it, and continues fighting.
    • How anyone can survive Chang's Climax DM is anybody's guess considering he hits the opponent so hard with his iron ball that they're sent flying and turned into A Twinkle in the Sky... only for them to land right behind Chang and actually startle him!
    • Heidern's Climax DM against Chang is funny hanks to the size difference between Heidern and Chang. The super ends up looking like Heidern is shoving his hand up Chang's ass, a la Faust.
    • There's something oddly funny about Mature applying her makeup right as she finishes slicing the opponent to pieces at the end of her Climax DM. Keep in mind she's also one of the Eight Heavenly Kings of Orochi... the Big Bad and Greater-Scope Villain of the entire series.
    • While Shun'ei's Climax DM in this game has him channel his inner JoJo (Even borrowing Crazy Diamond's "DORARARARA" Kiai) and deliver a series of Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs on the opponent with car-sized fists, Verse (in a darkly humorous way) takes the cake by essentially one-upping Shun'ei and doing the same thing... with hundreds of flaming fists!
    • Xanadu's Climax DM has him yelling right in the opponent's face before pummeling them and then going into the light, knocking them out. It Makes Just As Much Sense In Context, really.
    • Yamazaki's remixed Drill DM is different depending on how much you mash the punch button(s). While most of the versions simply have him beat the shit out of the opponent in various ways, the Level 3 version takes the cake by way of him pulling any random object out of Hammerspace and smacking the opponent upside the head with it! Guess he took notes from Kazuma Kiryu himself.
    • Yuri's new Climax has her take a page out of Dan Hibiki himself and pummel the opponent with her own take on the Ryuuko Ranbu; she smiles at the camera with a peace sign, smacks her bottom a bit, and then flashes another thumbs up at the camera! Dan would be so proud!

Meta/Other

  • Antonov is the instructor of the Tutorial Mode, where he presumes about how he's the champion and delightfully rubs in your face how you will never beat him, even if he's teaching you, the player, the basics to play the game. Now the funny part about this is the fact that the guy you might have originally been led to assume was the villain of this game is willing to introduce new players into the game mechanics as if deliberately invoking Nice Job Fixing It, Villain.
  • Geese Howard's reveal trailer has him in fine form, with several other fighters being met with a long string of "PREDICTABO".
  • Hitting people with PREDICTABO counters seems to be genetic: Rock's reveal trailer has a section dedicated to him performing Crack Counter over and over again.
  • Meitenkun gets a DLC skin/outfit... and it's a set of pajamas.
  • The anniversary gallery included contains a lot of artwork of KOF installments long past... and K9999's nowhere to be seen. Becomes much more Hilarious in Hindsight once you take into account Krohnen - he must have had gone completely off the grid to the point that even SNK couldn't find him!
