Swallows and Amazons (book)

  • After retrieving the stolen treasure, Captain Flint/Uncle Jim carves a fish out of a piece of wood, writes "honesty is the best policy" on it, and puts it where the treasure was, so the thieves will get a shock when they come to find the treasure.
  • When the Swallows return to Wildcat Island after winning the war, the Amazons tell them about their plan and how it went wrong.
Nancy: [about their reactions upon seeing the Amazon gone] Then we had a bit of an argument.
Peggy: A bit? It was a whole one and a half.

Swallowdale

  • John uses the agreed-upon signal (owl calls) to tell the Amazons they're ready to leave. Unfortunately, he does this twice, in the middle of the day, while the Amazons' Great Aunt is within hearing range. Hilarity Ensues.

Winter Holiday

  • Dick and Dorothea go to sleep on the houseboat, since Captain Flint is away. Then Dorothea sees a man approaching with suitcase. It's Captain Flint, returned unexpectedly, and he has to sleep on the houseboat since Nancy has mumps. Captain Flint's reaction to finding two strangers on his houseboat (and the cabin filled with rabbit skins, mittens and empty cans) is hilarious.

Pigeon Post

  • Every reference to Timothy, especially the fact that the Amazons, thinking he's an armadillo, have made a wooden box for him to live in, becomes Hilarious in Hindsight after the reveal that Timothy is: 1., human, and 2., Squashy Hat.

The Picts and the Martyrs

  • Nancy roping various people into helping her uphold the pretense that the Ds aren't visiting. It results in the doctor telling her he wishes she was at the bottom of the sea, and Timothy saying that he'd like to wring her neck.
  • The GA's final dressing down of some members of the searching party is quite snarkily funny and strongly suggests she and Nancy are not so different after all.

Swallows and Amazons (1974 film)

  • When making Captain Flint walk the plank, the Swallows and Amazons cover his eyes with a handkerchief.
Captain Flint: Clean handkerchief, I hope?
Peggy: Mine, and it was clean yesterday.

Swallows and Amazons (2016 film)

  • Roger fills the bathtub and puts his toy boats in it, then leaves them there when John tells him the taxi's arrived. Mother comes in and sees them.
Mother: If I close my eyes, that mess just won't be there.
  • Roger asks where Father's ship is, and is told it's in Hong Kong.
    Roger: Where's Hong Kong?
    Susan: The South China Sea.
Roger: Where's the South China Sea?
    Susan: South of China.
