Funny / Otherside Picnic

Go To

  • During Toriko and Sorawo's first meeting, Toriko compares Sorawo to Ophelia, earning a completely baffled reaction from Sorawo. The anime adds an extra joke when the two recall the moment:
Toriko: True, you looked like a drowned rat.
    Sorawo: What happened to Ophelia?
  • When Sorawo is on the verge of tears at the thought of losing access to the Otherside, Toriko tries to soothe her by patting her head. Sorawo isn't exactly moved by it.
A pat on the head? What was she, some sleazy playboy? I was ready to clobber her.
  • When Toriko has Sorawo against a wall, invading her personal space, she has Sorawo flustered and confused when she puts her hand on her chin and says "beautiful", referring to Sorawo's Magic Eye. Sorawo notes that she's slowly reaching a point where she's going to hit Toriko, and is at about 60% of the way there. When Toriko suggests taking her to see a specialist, Sorawo says she'll leave her meter at that 60% mark, just in case.
  • Sorawo's reaction to Toriko's readiness to pull a gun is funny enough, but it also leads to this exchange:
Toriko: Sorawo, the way you talk is funny.
    Sorawo: Huh?! How?!
Toriko: You’re in a hurry to make a witty retort... I dunno, you sound like one of those people making a fuss on Twitter.
    Sorawo: ...?!?!?!
  • When Sorawo and Kozakura get pulled together to the Otherside when trying to figure out what happened to Toriko, Kozakura is stuck with having to deal with the Kunekune's marshland in shorts and sandals. Sorawo hears her trying "to warm herself up with seething rage."
Kozakura: I'll turn that bird brain into fried chicken... Or chicken soup... If we had a saucepan, I'd add some fish and make hot pot...
Sorawo: It isn't hot pot season.
Kozakura: Oh shut up. I'm cold.
    • While Kozakura is making a pun based on Toriko's name (which has the Kanji for bird in it), this exchange is even funnier when you consider the fact that Sorawo has the Kanji for fish in her name.
    • A little while later, Sorawo tries to help out:
"Um, I don't have any clothes to offer, but, uh... Would you like a hug?"
Judging by Kozakura's expression, that was not an appropriate offer.
    • The final scene of that episode is abandoned upset Kozakura covered in various flowers and foliage pathetically begging for Sorawo to return and bring her home.
  • During the "Big Head" episode, Toriko is surprised when the woman on the fifth floor doesn't make her usual appearance during their elevator ride... until she looks up to see hands on the top of the door. And then long hair. And then a face. Cue screaming and gunfire.
    • Toriko and Sorawo's expressions when they see how close they came to bumbling into a glitch.
    • Toriko tries tying a string around a rock so they don't constantly have to retrieve it while testing for glitches, but she and Sorawo consider scenarios where that could go very, very wrong. The thing is, these scenarios are represented with goofy chibi versions of themselves, with both of them narrating their demises with an ominous declaration of "death."
    • Toriko's reaction when Sorawo makes her shove her hand into the blue light yet again:
Toriko: You need some serious people skills!
  • The anime added an extra visual gag to the part in "Time, Space, and a Middle Aged Man" where Sorawo wonders why the people who originated the "Spacetime Man" stories didn't choose something cuter to focus on. Her attempts at "something cuter" results in her imagining a middle-aged man... with a cat head.
    • Sorawo isn't happy with Kozakura referring to her argument with Toriko as a "lover's spat."
  • Toriko's drunken English during the start of the "Kisaragi Station" episode, when Sorawo asks if she can make it home is both hilarious and adorable, "Probably, maybe."
  • After spending the whole "Ninja Cat" arc dreading the inevitable fight with the eponymous Ninja Cats, Sorawo is finally forced to turn her eye on them, silently pleading "please don't look like cats, please don't look like cats." They look like cats.
  • Toriko REALLY doesn't like using her left hand. In the Attack of the Ninja Cats episode, Sorawo grabs her hand and forces into Akari's body. (This Makes Sense In Context.) Cue disgusted sounds from Toriko.
    • Even funnier in the novel, where you get this Double Entendre.
Toriko: What do I do with it?!
Sorawo: Stuff it inside Akari's body!
      Toriko: Wh... Whaaaa?!
  • When Toriko tries to interfere between Sannuki-san and Akari, Sorawo tells her to stand down. The thing is, she specifically tells Toriko "stay" (in English), like one would a disobedient puppy! Toriko's reaction is appropriately offended.
  • Akari going totally berserk while sporting a Slasher Smile when Sorawo uses her Magic Eye on her.
  • In the light novel, after the "Ninja Cat" incident, Toriko takes to meowing at the end of sentences to tease Sorawo.
  • Sorawo ends up having to tell Kozakura that there's a gate to Otherside at her front door.
  • With regards to "self-responsibility" stories that are claimed to cause bizarre events to happen to those that read them, Sorawo says that she's read all of them and nothing bizarre ever happened to her. She tells that to the researcher of the other world she entered and to her monster-fighting partner in said other world (you know, the one with the see-through hand) while looking at them with both of her eyes (you know, the left one and the right one that's an unearthly blue color and that can be used to drive people insane). She trails off when looking at the stares she gets from the aforementioned women, all the while still not understanding what she said that was so weird.
  • During the "Inviting Hot Springs" segment, Kozakura comes to the realization that Toriko and Sorawo are too shy to bathe in each other's presence. She emphatically tells them that she is not going to go along just to play "chaperone" to the "lovebirds". Gilligan Cut to Kozakura boarding the train with the pair.
  • After Toriko saves Sorawo, Sorawo vomits, and Toriko pats her back until the dry heaves stop. Then, when Sorawo asks for a slap to prevent Sanity Slippage, and she gives her a Big Damn Kiss instead, Toriko asks Sorawo how it was. Sorawo suggests Toriko tell her, first. Toriko licks her lips, then says, cheerfully, it tasted "like puke".
