  • Chapter 1 (animated in Episode 1):
    • Sakura takes four hours to realize that Nozaki was a mangaka, all while helping him with the manga the whole time.
    • Sakura tries to confess to Nozaki a second time, but stumbles and says she's his fan again, garnering a second autograph. The anime makes the moment even funnier, with Sakura feigning happiness while crying in dismay.
    • At school, she reads the description of Yumeno Sakiko, who is described as being "sensitive", the scene cuts to a group of students freak out over a cockroach and Nozaki kills it with a shoe without care. Furthermore Yumeno is considered to "[having] a subtle insight into girls' feelings. Therefore, he's been regarded as the spokesperson of girls' feelings." The next scene shows him, bluntly telling a girl her bra is showing and she should wear a jacket, in front of the cockroach group - much to said girl's anger and embarrassment.
  • The parts with the tandem bicycle in Chapter 2 (adapted in Episode 1). Everyone reacts like you might expect - the general public is in disbelief, and Sakura is pretty apathetic about the situation. Trying out the various romantic situations, like Sakura sitting to the side or holding on to Nozaki, look appropriately ridiculous. In the end, after the bicycle scene Nozaki drew becomes popular, Sakura proposes a ride on the tandem bicycle with Nozaki.
  • In Chapter 3 (adapted in Episode 2):
    • Sakura is introduced to Nozaki's peculiar assistant and friend Mikoshiba, who's shown to be popular with the girls and a bit irritating, as Sakura finds out. Then he drops a cheesy, flirtatious line which we can expect something this sort of person is inclined to do...and within seconds he freezes and starts to blush from head to toe because even he realizes how stupid he sounded. He acts like such a Tsundere, to the point that Nozaki uses him as an inspiration for Mamiko, the heroine of his manga.
    • Mikoshiba at one point tries to flirt with Sakura — however since she's Nozaki-sexual it just makes them both horrified and embarrassed.
    • When Mikoshiba takes part in the art test with the others, it's shown that he's a horrible drawer. He's unable to draw a person, a dog or even a simple building — the kicker however is that Nozaki and Sakura (both skilled artists who can easily draw animals and people) are also terrible at drawing buildings.
  • Chapter 4 (Episode 2):
    • Nozaki asks Sakura if she knows anyone who can be a model for a new character for his manga — turns out if he's unable to base a character on someone, they all end up looking like Suzuki. Sakura is unimpressed when Nozaki demonstrates this, by having three Suzukis fight for Mamiko's love.
    • Sakura decides to introduce Nozaki to Seo, and she describes her as someone who's always being chased. Cue Nozaki imagining a sweet, shy girl running away from her wannabe suitors before Seo is introduced with her being chased...by the school teachers for being late.
    • Seo wonders why Sakura is acquainted with Nozaki, noting that he is super tall and Sakura is notably super short before coming to the conclusion that he's into ''lolita'', pissing him off.
    • Seo brags to Nozaki about how she's always needed by others for things, aware of her surroundings, and can read the situation, all while photobombing a group picture, walking over someone's calligraphy sign, and interrupting a love confession respectively. She suddenly wonders if she's too perfect, surprising Nozaki that she doesn't do those things on purpose.
    • After being dragged into bringing stacks of books to another classroom, Seo proposes a game to Nozaki. Nozaki thinks of rock-paper-scissors; Seo on the other hand suggests that whoever can walk on their hands the longest will carry the other persons' stack. Before Nozaki can even process this, Seo promptly handstands and scuttles away like some weird four-limbed crab. When another teacher (one of the ones who chased her that morning) spots her, she turns around and goes back to Nozaki in the exact same handstand-crab scuttle.
    • While Nozaki's studying Seo for character inspiration, he discovers she's an excellent singer nicknamed the Lorelei of the Choir Club. He's horrified by how someone of such questionable character can have such a nice voice.
      Nozaki: This is fraud!
  • Chapter 6, animated as the latter half of Episode 3:
    • Sakura recognizes Hori as one of Nozaki's helpers by saying just "briefs". Kashima, who is nearby and has no idea of that fact, takes the ensuing conversation out of context.
    • Kashima then concludes Hori just gets in a good mood when you talk dirty with him. She attempts to talk about briefs with him herself... he reacts by kicking her.
Hori: Now you're sexually harassing me?!
  • Chapter 8 (animated in Episode 4):
    • Mikoshiba recalling his gripping tale of how he became a closet otaku, complete with ragequits, lampshade hanging, and his refusal to give up until he finally unlocked a good ending.
Mikoshiba: Then, things went from 2D to 3Dnote ...
Nozaki: Aren't you getting further from reality?
    • Nozaki and Mikoshiba becoming enthralled with the Mr. Exposition best friend character in the dating sim they're playing. Up to and including making up their own scenario of the protagonist of the game ending up with him.
      TOMODAAAA!!!
  • Chapter 13:
    • The myth of Lorelei, a siren whose singing lures boatmen to destruction, is told. Cut to Seo discussing to Nozaki how she likes to destroy her fans' hearts when they find out her identity.
Nozaki: So you get the complete set, including the destruction.
  • Chapter 14 (animated as the first half of Episode 6):
    • Wakamatsu sends a letter of challenge to Seo... but since he took his cues from shoujo manga, the letter looks more like a love confession. Seo and Sakura are obviously creeped out by it.
    • In the same chapter, Wakamatsu rants at Seo about all the bad things she's done to him and how poorly she compares ... to Lorelei. Nozaki, who is listening in, falls on his knees in dismay at how Wakamatsu is unwittingly making a fool of himself. By the end of Wakamatsu's rant, Nozaki is lying on the floor, curled in a half-fetal position.
    • When Wakamatsu gets around to issuing his shoujo manga-inspired challenge (which involved throwing a glove at the one being challenged), he just ends up dramatically giving a pair of mittens to Seo. She sees it as a gift and becomes further convinced that he has a crush on her.
  • In Chapter 15/Episode 5 Kashima complains about Nozaki refusing to tire his arms from carrying her and opting to push her in a cart instead. Hori comments even he could carry her and lifts her up - Kashima's startled reaction and Hori's worried look screams of Ship Tease. Kashima's response? Getting down and lifting Hori up herself arguing she can carry him too.
    Hori: Stop competing with me!
  • Chapter 17/first half of Episode 9:
    • The page image above : Nozaki and Sakura tried to use his jacket as a cover for rain. It doesn't go well.
    • Sakura is excited to use the same umbrella with Nozaki...but she forgets their height differences, it ended up covering Nozaki's head.
    • When walking home, Nozaki leans the umbrella towards Sakura's side to follow the shojo cliche of the boy giving the girl more coverage while sharing an umbrella... what he doesn't realize is that he's doing the exact opposite to Sakura, as holding the umbrella unevenly has caused the water from the hood to pour on Sakura's head.
    • Then a car zooms in and splashing them both with water.
    • Hori and his friend walk up on several umbrellas in a sphere. Hori yells at them for blocking the road and drags Kashima out by the collar. The friend wonders how the hell Hori knew where she was in that.
  • In Chapter 20/the latter half of Episode 6:
    • The chapter opens with Sakura receiving an SOS text from Nozaki. While rushing to his place, she romanticizes a situation in which Nozaki is sick and she has to take care of him. She then thinks that she's become savvy enough to realize that he's just crunching for a deadline and brought him some ink... only to see that he really is sick. Even funnier is that Wakamatsu and Hori arrive soon after, and thought the same thing, as they also brought some ink. The look of disbelief the three give each other sells the moment.
    • In order to write lines for Mamiko while Nozaki's sick, Hori asks Chiyo and Wakamatsu to think of a girl they know and find out what she'd say in a given situation. They do... but the girl they visualize as Mamiko is Seo, and as a result all of the lines they think for Mamiko end up sounding totally obnoxious and rough. Hori even lampshades it, saying "Aren't there any decent girls around you two?".
  • Chapter 24:
    • Hori gives Nozaki an exercise to draw another cup on a table behind the one he already sketched. Hori tries to guess as to how Nozaki will mess it up, only to see that Nozaki's drawn it the same size as the other one and beyond the table boundaries, so it looks like it's floating. Hori says that Nozaki should at least draw it on the table... Nozaki responds by extending the table's surface, making the sketch look like an optical illusion.
    • Hori tries to help Nozaki remember the seating position of his characters in a scene and gives him some objects to represent the characters and help him visualise better. Nozaki ends up drawing them exactly the same as the objects (hence Mamiko became an eraser and Suzuki became a pacer), and Hori flat out says, "You are beyond help."
    • Nozaki then uses figurines to represent the characters and help him visualise - his Bishōnen figurine as Suzuki and Mikoshiba's Bishoujo figurines as Mamiko and the other girl and guy. This does help Nozaki finish and at first it looks like it solves his problem - until you read on and see that he based the characters off the bishoujo figurines a little too accurately and not only Mamiko and the other girl but even the guy are sporting swimsuits and big breasts. Hori does not take it well.
    • At first, Nozaki's figure reference consisted of just 4 dolls sitting on a table. Mikoshiba plays around with them by adding teacup sets and various items, and Hori keeps building rooms and sections until it practically becomes a dollhouse. However, both Mikoshiba and Hori continuously berate Nozaki for moving stuff in the dollhouse until he eventually grows sick of it and hangs an eviction notice on it.
  • In Chapter 25, Ken asks Nozaki to give Suzuki some flaws because he's too perfect. Asking his friends for ideas, Sakura suggests giving him a fear of blood, while Mikorin suggests giving him a violent Crazy Jealous Guy streak. Nozaki combines them both, and ends up drawing a scene of Suzuki beating another guy bloody while swooning because he's afraid of the resultant blood splatter.
  • In Chapter 27, Seo's first encounter with Mikoshiba... is when she wakes up to see him falling out of the tree she was sleeping under. Her excuse to her teacher when coming in late for class is as follows:
Seo: I'm late cause a stud fell from the sky.
Teacher: Seo, are you taking me for a fool?
  • Chapter 28 (adapted as first half of Episode 12)
    • Sakura admits to her friends she was unable to give Nozaki chocolates she got for him on Valentine's Day - not because she was scared, but because every time it was announced that someone was being given chocolates, Nozaki went to watch, as it would have been useful material for his manga.
    • Seo, when prompted about her own Valentine's Day experience, recalls a time when she was a kid where she used to play with a kid called Okada. She mentions putting Okada in a truck once and the truck driving off with him in it, but suddenly stops there, realizing she's telling the wrong story. Sakura then worriedly demands to know Okada's fate.
    • Kashima mentions that Hori didn't want homemade chocolate, so she tricked him by getting store bought chocolate and replacing them with duplicates she made herself. Sakura wonders if that means she actually likes Hori or hates him, to which she replies that she likes him, of course.
    • Having left chocolate in the fridge months after Valentine's Day, Sakura decides to give them to Nozaki as the timing will be less awkward. When she's walking around with them, Nozaki accidentally bumps into her and spills the chocolates onto the floor. He apologizes and, when she says she wanted him to eat them, he thinks that she's pissed off at him and wants him to eat them from the floor as punishment for dropping them. When he starts eating them, he sees her look so happy and thinks that she must have been very angry to be so satisfied by him eating them.
  • Chapter 30/Episode 10 has Mikoshiba filling in for an actor in the Drama Club. Hori comments that Mikoshiba's mannerisms reminds him of someone...and then realizes that it's Mamiko he's reminded of. Hori doesn't even know that Mikoshiba is the inspiration for her, yet it still shines through. Even funnier, Hori starts calling him "Mamikoshiba".
  • Chapter 31/Episode 11 has Nozaki trying to surprise Sakura in ridiculous ways, like acting as her seat, and firing a fake hand holding a bouquet at her.
  • The ridiculousness of the game the boys play in Chapter 32, which includes a love interest whose problem is being Satan.
    • The game gets to the boys so much that all three of them begin to doubt men in general, with Nozaki nervously questioning Mikoshiba what he's hiding while hiding behind Sakura, Wakamatsu being too afraid of his teammates to play basketball, and Hori... confuses Kashima by asking what it would happen if he grew wings.
    • In a fanbook, Tsubaki published two rejected alternate endings for Chapter 32, one where Hori point blank tells Kashima "I might be Satan" and she has absolutely no reaction, and one where Hori is so afraid that he huddles close to Kashima for security, which does shock her.
  • In Chapter 35, Nozaki sets up a scenario where he, Sakura and Mikoshiba have to somehow find each other at the train station without using their cell phones, as inspiration for his manga. Desperate to find them, Mikoshiba uses his last resort - turning himself in to the lost children's centre.
Announcer: Your attention please. A lost child, Mikoshiba Mikoto from ***, has been found and is waiting to be picked up.
    Sakura/Nozaki: (Blue with Shock) Mikorin?!
  • Chapter 36/Episode 8:
    • Hori tries to help Nozaki with backgrounds. At one point, Hori tells Nozaki to try drawing a background himself, and he does, except it ends up looking like one of the characters is floating. Nozaki's fix is to draw a box under him.
    • Hori points out a bunch of pages with abnormal height differences, and Nozaki's excuse each time is that certain people were standing on boxes. Hori points out that it's really out of place... so Nozaki attempts to rectify it by saying that boxes became really popular in-universe.
    • Hori's contempt towards boxes comes to a head near the end when he spots Kashima using one to grab something up high, and otherwise not doing anything out of place. Just the sight of someone on a box is enough to get him to fly off the handle and kick the box out from under her.
    • The scene where Kashima carries Hori to the nurse's office would be more heartwarming than funny... if Kashima wasn't wearing a bull mask. What's funnier is Hori seems to like it, because there's a cut to him asking Nozaki for a play about a prince who turns into a bull.
  • Chapter 38/second half of Episode 12:
    • During a singing lesson, Kashima laments how little progress she's made. Seo and Sakura comfort her, saying she's definitely improved and that they'll love to listen to her - and then they immediately block their ears while still smiling.
    • Kashima and Mikoshiba are standing side-by-side at the festival while waiting for Seo and Sakura. Since they are both Chick Magnets, a bunch of girls are advancing on them, with a Voice of the Legion.
    • Unsurprisingly, Mikoshiba is a bit out of touch regarding festivals.
  • Chapter 44 (45 in the tankobon):
    • Nozaki decides to create a mascot character at Ken's suggestion. Sakura asks what animals Ken likes, and Nozaki says he said he likes salmon. This results in Sakura imagining Mamiko carrying a salmon everywhere she goes, then telling Nozaki "I tried thinking about it rationally, and I really don't think sleeping with a fish is a good idea."
    • Nozaki decides to use the salmon as a mascot and gives Mamiko a salmon-patterned bag. Somehow the bag ended up usurping Suzuki's role as a love interest, which leads Sakura to comment further, "It's not good if a fish eats a person after all."
    • In omake, Ken thought the fish is a carp (koi) and it is a smart wordplay for the title "Koi shi yo" aka "Let's Fall in Love". Nozaki just nod and agreed with it.
  • Chapter 45 (46 in the tankobon; adapted in Episodes 1-3 of the OVA specials):
    • Mikoshiba says he's fine going to the drama club's retreat because he'll have Kashima there. Sakura points out that the bedrooms and baths will still be separate due to their gender. Kashima laughs it off, commenting that even Mikoshiba knows that much... cut to Mikoshiba's freaked out face, as it turns out he didn't realize that after all.
    • Wakamatsu, as a consequence of being Locked Out of the Loop with Kashima's gender, understandably freaks a bit when he eavesdrops and follows the girls around; for example he overhears the "boyfriend" inviting Seo to sleep in "his" room during the drama retreat, and when swimsuit shopping with them he also witnesses the "boyfriend" happily going in the change room to try on a bikini Sakura chose for "him".
    • In the end, Wakamatasu finally gets told by Nozaki that Kashima's a girl. His blushing face as he realizes how perverted his actions looked when with the girls is priceless.
  • Chapter 46 (47 in the tankobon; adapted in Episodes 4-6 of the OVA specials):
    • To make things more exciting, Seo secretly takes out Nozaki, Mikoshiba and Wakamatsu's trunk strings, leading their trunks to slip off while swimming at the beach. Kashima sees one of the trunks float by and mistakes it for Hori's. Then she sees the other two float by and, thinking they're also his, she grabs Hori's (actual) trunks and tries to check if he's wearing more, exclaiming, "How many are you wearing?!"
    • When Sakura gets the trunks back from Kashima, she attempts to return them to the boys by throwing them. At the very moment they land in the water, a wave quickly washes them away.
  • In Chapter 53, Ryousuke Seo hears the rumors that paint Nozaki as Miyako's Domestic Abuser. When he later sees the pair brainstorming manga ideas in the cafe he works in, he inevitably misunderstands their discussions as Miyako being taken for granted and ends up demanding that Nozaki stand and face him, only to tell him to sit down again when Nozaki looms over him.
  • Chapter 54:
    • During a test of courage, Nozaki assigns himself as Mamiko, Kashima as Suzuki (of course she doesn't know what he's doing), and Hori as Suzuki's love rival. Then Kashima receives a phone call from Mikoshiba, the original model for Mamiko. Nozaki, who's trying to roleplay as the heroine, is dismayed to see "Suzuki" hanging out with two "Mamiko"s, and hijacks the phonecall to tell the confused Mikoshiba that he'll be Mamiko for that day before hanging up.
    • Nozaki tries to get Hori to pat him and make "Suzuki" jealous, and it sort of works... except Kashima keeps jumping in Nozaki's way so that Hori will pat her instead. Frustrated, Nozaki yells at Kashima, "Goddamn, get out of the way, Suzuki!"
    • Hori decides to take Kashima on another test of courage at school and tell her a ghost story, much to Kashima's delight. One must wonder what story he told, because a Gilligan Cut later Hori calls Nozaki grinning ear to ear with Kashima, previously said to not be scared of the test of courage, clinging to his arm and shaking with fear.
    • Due to Kashima (as Suzuki) constantly butting in earlier, Nozaki's draft to Miyamae shows Suzuki fighting Mamiko for the love rival's affection:
Suzuki: I will be the one he pets! (gets patted on the head by the love rival, who is practically identical to Hori) Too bad, Mamiko! HAHAHAHA!
Nozaki: Suzuki got stolen by the love rival because of my incompetence!
  • Chapter 56:
  • Chapter 57.
    • Kashima agrees to pretend to be Mikoshiba's girlfriend to ward off one of his admirers, and she offers to do a run-through. Cue montage of Kashima doing actions more typical of a boyfriend, such as helping Mikoshiba with his homework, leading him by the hand, and carrying him bridal style.
      Kashima: What do you think?
Mikoshiba: I felt like I got a boyfriend.
    • Mikoshiba notes that talking to a silent and dolled-up Seo is like talking to another person. After he introduces her as his girlfriend to his admirer, he passes his bag to Seo while he says that he can only imagine her holding it. And then Seo throws it on the ground.
      Mikoshiba: Ah... there's Seo.
    • Wakamatsu of all people is the only one who's able to recognize Seo in her dolled-up look...in exactly the way you'd expect him to from this kind of series.
Wakamatsu: Eh? Huh? SEO-SENPAI'S WEARING SOCKS!
Seo: Way to notice that little detail!
  • Chapter 60:
    • In order to help her understand unrequited love, Nozaki first asks Kashima who would motivate her in certain roles, and she responds with "Hori-senpai" every time. What makes it funny is the image on the side, which has Hori filling in various spots like loved one, rival, mother, and pet, as Kashima gives her answers.
    • Nozaki tries to ask Kashima how she'd feel if Hori started spending time with another girl, but he literally can't imagine a girl who wouldn't switch her affections to Kashima.
    • Some of Nozaki's other tactics include telling Kashima to imagine him and Hori dating, and having lunch with Hori. Both times, they affect Sakura more than they do Kashima, and Nozaki wonders why Sakura is so distraught.
    • In the last strip, Nozaki says that he'd be really down if Sakura acted really cold towards him, and Sakura responds that she'd never do that. It isn't until a later conversation, when someone says that it hurts when a close friend suddenly gives you a cold shoulder, that she realizes the implication of what she said, and completely flips out.
  • Chapter 61:
    • Nozaki and Sakura, who are flip-phone users, try to think of a new cutting-edge phone model for Mamiko and Suzuki. Nozaki asks what functions Sakura would want on hers... and she lists off an alarm clock, texting and camera. And Nozaki exactly agrees with her, saying it's perfect with just those three functions. He then goes into a Pose of Supplication, exclaiming that it's basically a flip-phone.
    • Nozaki and Sakura approach Mikoshiba about smartphones but he eventually leaves them because he's become too annoyed at them continuously opening and closing their flip-phones. Sakura and Nozaki ponder about it, all while clicking and snapping away with their flip-phones.
    • Sakura treats the cup and string like anyone else would their phone. The other girls in her class look at Sakura's phone laying unused at her desk and wonder what its function is.
    • Two students steal Nozaki's cup and attempt to run an Ore Ore scam on Sakura, claiming that Nozaki somehow got into a traffic accident and summoned his lawyer. On campus. In the few minutes they've been apart.
    • The cup and string does help find love... for two completely random characters who bond over a shared interest in bands.
    • The draft Nozaki turns in to Ken has Mamiko and Suzuki speaking into their phones as if they were a cup and string. Ken points out the oddity.
  • Chapter 62:
    • Nozaki mistakes Wakamatsu inquiring whether or not "Oze" is in the next chapter as a sign that Wakamatsu likes the character the most — something he considers to be pretty horrifying since the character is a genderswap of a person that frequently antagonizes Wakamatsu on a regular basis. As it turns out, Wakamatsu's just excited because Oze's entire hair is a single screentone, making it easy work.
    • Wakamatsu tries explaining his attachment to pasting in screentones to Hori.
Wakamatsu: It's hectic overall, and I have to pay close attention. I sometimes wish he went bald, but when I paste the tone cleanly, I feel accomplished...Right! It's like what Kashima-senpai is to you!
Hori: I wish for many things, but baldness is not one of them.
    • Nozaki tries to get Hori to understand by making him paste a screentone in the hair of an illustration of Kashima. Hori doesn't even look regretful about cutting through the paper.
    • In a Call-Back to Chapter 30, Hori comments that Oze reminds him of someone...and right on cue, Seo appears, which causes the connection between the two to hit Hori at full force. Then he realizes who the female character "Waka" is based off of...then he begins shipping their real life counterparts.
    • Sakura once again displays that she's not so above it all — Hori recalls the time at the festival when Nozaki bit into her apple, and afterwards it's shown that she was very eager about preserving it.
  • In Chapter 68, a photo of a girl's legs catches Hori's eye and he proclaims they're his type... and said legs turn out to be Kashima's. Once she finds out, Kashima tries to draw Hori's attention to them again, however he doesn't notice and is fixated on her face as he talks to her. A frustrated Sakura and Mikoshiba then realize that the reason Hori's never paid attention to Kashima's legs is because he's too obsessed with her face.
  • Chapter 78
    • Mikoshiba and Sakura spot Nozaki at a restaurant for some inspiration. He proceeds to get Sakura in the role of the girl for this piece, with himself in the role of the boy... and Mikoshiba in the role of a spirit, who is supposed to speak to the girl even though she's not supposed to know that it's there at all.
    • The whole things turns out to be fruitless, because the conversation they're meant to have becomes less "lovers-to-be" and more "parent and child", considering how hungry Sakura is during the exercise.
  • In Chapter 83, the drama club have an improv day and ad-lib to whatever topics they're given. In all three romance scenarios (two of Suzuki/Mamiko and one of Nozaki/Sakura)... at least one person dies, much to Nozaki and Sakura's annoyance. Hori shrugs off their complaints, saying the members like to kill their characters off because it wraps everything up nicely.
  • Chapter 84.5 has Sakura's brother Towa run into Nozaki and think him a pervert for his (strictly professional) interest in uniforms. He tries to warn Sakura about this via text, but her classmates offer to answer him in her stead. Their answer? "Don't worry, your sister's a giant pervert too."
  • In Chapter 88, Sakura finds out about Wakamatsu's crush on Lorelei and decides to tell him about her true identity (ie. Seo). Nozaki however is deadset on Wakamatsu never finding out. As a result, every time Sakura approaches Wakamatsu about Lorelei, Nozaki immediately rushes over and quickly carries Sakura away. Sakura has to remind herself that she shouldn't be enjoying this.
  • Chapter 89
    • Nozaki's nervous philosophical rambling when explaining his latest scenario for manga ideas:
"We all have endless potential. So to speak, everyone is Suzuki, and at the same time, everyone is also Mamiko..."
    • Nozaki comes up with an Alternate Character Interpretation of a novella they're studying for a test, with two of the novel's characters being shoujo-fied into Homoerotic Subtext. And then his classmates use it as reference material.
Prompt: Explain their emotions when they have a falling out.
Totsuka's answer: They're in such despair that their hearts ache and they can't breathe, just from disagreeing each other.
Teacher: Their emotions weren't that intense!!!
  • Chapter 91:
    • Miyako informs Ryousuke that Nozaki and Maeno's relationship "used to be like [hers and Maeno's]" and Miyamae "took up Maeno's position" in regards to Nozaki. She's obviously talking about their mangaka/editor work; Ryousuke on the other hand misinterprets all this as some messed up Love Dodecahedron, where not only are Nozaki and Maeno both Miyako's boyfriends, but the two of them are ex-boyfriends AND Nozaki and Miyamae are also boyfriends. When finding out Miyako and Miyamae have no connections whatsoever, Ryousuke can only jump to one conclusion:
      Ryousuke: I'm next...!!!?
Love Dodecahedron diagram: (now has Ryousuke inserted between Miyako and Miyamae)
Narration: And thus it became a pentagon...
    • Ryousuke is under the impression that Miyako's side job is a hostess. She tries to explain her professional relationship with Nozaki, Miyamae and Maeno to Ryousuke without actually revealing her actual career, which leads to Ryousuke getting imagine spots of Nozaki as a fellow hostess and the editors as dance girls.
    • Despite Miyako clearing up all the misunderstandings about her supposed love life to Ryousuke, only one misunderstanding remains— Miyamae is now presumed to be an erotic dancer, of all things.
  • In Chapter 93 during the second years' school trip, Sakura is excited to see Nozaki in casual clothing. Her friend points out he'll probably only turn up in a t-shirt and jeans, but Sakura insists Nozaki will look trendy. During the whole conversation, Sakura's other friend spots Nozaki nearby exactly in a t-shirt and jeans, and Nozaki (who's overheard Sakura's high expectations) cowers in his parka in shame. The friend feels bad for him, and Nozaki proceeds to avoid Sakura for the rest of the travel to Kyoto.
  • In Chapter 95, the basketball club members are so excited to see Seo gone (due to the trip) that they run and roll around in joy. The captain laughs it off until the members proceed to frolic around in a circle while holding hands, which just makes him yell at the club to start playing basketball already.
  • Chapter 99 introduces Kashima's little sister Rei, who attends a fancy all-girls school. As a result, she looks and acts the part of a young proper lady, but has a disturbingly wild imagination when it comes to boy-girl romance; one look at Seo casually interacting with Wakamatsu and Mikoshiba leads to her imagining the trio naked together.

  • Chapter 106 and 107 revolves around Nozaki's attempt to use hypnotism as manga material. Somehow it works, and Hilarity Ensues .
    • Sakura ended up merely being hungry.
    • Somehow Wakamatsu ended up hypnotizing himself as a dog in 106... and the hypnotism isn't lifted until the end of 107.
    • Kashima completely forgot about Hori. Then her sister made it even more complicated which somehow ended up with Hori confessing he likes Kashima no matter how she is like.
      • This one needs elaboration: Rei hears from Yuu that she forgot about Hori after playing with Nozaki's hypnosis book, and immediately concludes that Nozaki was planning to set Hori up to "ask her body instead". So, naturally, she decides to "help out" by rewriting Kashima's hypnosis instructions to make her more submissive. The scanlators do a perfect job of conveying the inherent hilarity of "prim and proper girl who only speaks in keigo attempts to do mind control hentai IRL".
Rei: You... shall do whatever Hori-sama says... Um... Oh yeah. And be totally servile. Or rather, his "bitch" as it were. Woof woof, and such.

  • Chapter 111 has Nozaki, Sakura, Hori and Wakamatsu play "relay novel". Nozaki starts first, but Hori keeps on throwing weird curveballs that makes continuing the story difficult. Wakamatsu doesn't even attempt to continue the story, and simply writes a completely unrelated scene where a bunch of random characters chat and say, "Apparently..." Sakura complains about this, but after they restart the game by replacing Hori and Wakamatsu with Mikoshiba, it's clear that's she's just as bad as the other two.
    • The omake had the order changed into Nozaki being the first to set up the protagonists, Sakura is next after Nozaki and Hori the third. The result?
      Kashima: What are you reading?
      Hori: Nozaki's personal data.

  • Chapter 112 shows the result of Hori's 'confession' to Kashima. Mikoshiba went to investigate.
Mikoshiba: Has anything changed with Kashima?
Hori: Lately she's been a pain in the ass.
Mikoshiba: (deadpanned) I asked what changed.

  • Chapter 115 :
    • Nozaki telling Seo to pretend his bag is actually Wakamatsu, which dropped Nozaki's P.E. uniform
Seo: Wakamatsu gave birth to Nozaki? Congrats, Wakamatsu!

    • Nozaki makes a doll that looked like Wakamatsu for Seo. Hori is suspicious that it could be a cursed/voodoo doll.
    • In omake, Chiyo actually jumped to take that doll from Nozaki, not because it looked like Wakamatsu, but because it is made by Nozaki.
    • Nozaki thought how Seo is still a girl for liking the doll... But when Nozaki is looking away, Seo pulls out the doll's pants and peeking inside.

  • Chapter 116 had Chiyo's class make a competition for (fake) love confession. It ended with the target being deeply moved by the (fake) story, even using Kashima's piano recording as his ringtone.
    • The omake had Mikoshiba also joining in, but it is the target's friend who was replying instead. He is also moved and curious as to who the sender is and viewing Mikoshiba in different light once he found out.

  • Chapter 117: Somewhat a Brick Joke, since chapter 112 ended with Hori casually saying love to Kashima, a Kashima's fan thought he's a playboy.

  • Chapter 127 : Apparently everyone in Chiyo's class know about her crush it isn't even "a secret crush".

  • Chapter 128 had Chiyo (drawn as manju with ribbon) take over Nozaki's blog popularity.
Mikoshiba: This manju bun is powerful...

  • Chapter 131 had several points :
    • Nozaki is looking inspiration for Oze and found Seo betrays his expectation.
Nozaki: Oze is a dedicated guy all along...!!!?
    • Seo putting Wakamatsu too sleep whenever the mood becomes romantic, which translates to Nozaki's manga as well.
  • Chapter 134 had Ryousuke finally confessed to Miyako...in Tanuki costume.
  • Chapter 136 had Nozaki and Sakura tried to make a drama script so Hori had a role to play. The best Sakura can come up with...is Hori being Kashima's mantle holder.
    • The brick joke is even Hori agreed it is fun in the end.
    • Tsubaki sensei draws Nozaki as Sakura's mantle holder in twitter.
  • Chapter 137 had Kashima misunderstood the script to be Hori's true feeling. She was really embarassed when she figured it out, being angry and act cold towards Hori. But then Kashima is being Kashima...
Hori: (stunned) I've never met someone who only speaks in theater dialogue when they get embarassed...
Kashima: (blushed) AAAAAHH shut your mouth !!
    • The entire 'fight' between Kashima and Hori only lasts three days.
  • The anime's opening has gems such as one of Maeno's beloved tanuki being destroyed in an over the top fashion and Hori kicking Kashima after she strikes a cool pose, but the kicker is the lyrics of the opening. The whole song is about being tsundere in a way that makes you wonder if Mikoshiba wrote it.
  • Episode 8 of the anime: "HEEEY HAH HAAH!"
  • Episode 10 of the anime, where Kashima demonstrates her singing ability: Cue style change with 40s war film theme and Dvorak's New World Symphony, Nozaki and Sakura clawing the walls in agony, and Seo calmly observing until the end, where it's revealed she had earplugs in the whole time (and still described it as awful).
  • The last scene in Episode 12 has Sakura confessing to Nozaki, but she's not sure if he heard her or not. He slowly leans in and says in her ear that he feels the same way... but it turns out he thought she was saying that she loves fireworks. Sakura is baffled but decides to take it in stride. In the end, Nozai mentions that he wants to add some fireworks to a chapter of his manga in the near future.
  • The cover of the official fanbook has all the main characters decked out in formal attire and attending a grandiose ball... until you notice Mayu lying down on the floor.
  • The Anthology chapter, where the main cast participate in The King's Game:
    • When Seo becomes King, she orders Sakura to rub Nozaki's butt. As she does so, Nozaki tells her to "rub it well".
    • In the middle of the game, the "kings" run out of ideas, and for several consecutive rounds, they give the order to take a piece of clothing off. Mikoshiba gets hit with all of these orders, that by the end of the strip, he's left with just his underwear.
    • The last order Nozaki makes as King is for him to to carry Sakura. Sakura thinks he will carry her bridal-style and becomes flustered by the thought of it. Instead, he raises her over his shoulder while running and saying "High, high~" as if he were playing with a child. Sakura screams in fear the whole time, and later Nozaki laments to Miyako that she's become afraid of him ever since.
  • The fanbook also provides some hilarious moments in the scrapped chapters and alternative endings:
    • Chapter 45's alternative route 1:
      • Wakamatsu misunderstands that Kashima is Seo's Domestic Abuser and confronts her about hanging out with other girls too much which is hurting her. Only thing is, he uses "Senpai" to refer to Seo and so Kashima thinks he's referring to Hori.
      • Gleeful that Hori apparently wants her to himself, Kashima announces to him that she will henceforth only act if he plays the part of princess opposite her, assuming that he'll be happy that he has no more competition. Hori instead takes this to mean that she's threatening to quit the club.
      • The commentary states that if Hori were given the impression that Kashima would quit the drama club unless he played the part of princess in a play, Hori would become so invested in the role that he'd willingly wear a corset, start studying the movements of women, go looking for someone to stand-in for his voice, and even go get his eyebrows plucked, all for the sake of playing it perfectly so Kashima wouldn't quit.
    • Chapter 45's alternative route 2:
    • Scrapped sleepover chapter:
      • After her bath, Sakura decides to try out the Letting Her Hair Down trope to catch Nozaki's attention. Except Hori beats her to it, and she breaks down sobbing that he's cute with his bangs down.
      • Nozaki stares an awful lot at the ribbons Sakura left behind in the bathroom, leading Hori to wonder if he's thinking of love... and then Nozaki puts them on.
  • Chapter 144 has Mikoshiba come in talking about how he thinks he's in love. Nozaki and Sakura quickly surmise that he's talking about a game character...but the real funny part is that it turns out next page that they were right, and Mikoshiba being in love a game character isn't even used as the page's direct punchline.
