- All the scenes where Cassandra and Thomas bring food to their imprisoned father.
- The 'bear' incident was absolutely hilarious.
- When Topaz discovers James Mortmain locked in Belmotte Tower. Cassandra then mentions that Topaz is not actually hysterical since she suddenly remembers to lower her voice dramatically.
- Apparently there is literary value to starting a book with "The cat sat on the mat" nineteen times.
- Cassandra explaining the cake-knife incident.Cassandra: Father explained in court that killing a woman with our silver cake-knife would be a long weary business entailing sawing her to death; and he was completely exonerated of any intention of slaying Mother.
- Later Cassandra describes how unsociable he has become:Cassandra: Oh, poor Father, he really is very pathetic. But he might at least do a little work in the garden.
- In the first chapter, when Rose dramatically suggests selling herself to earn some money, Topaz suggests it would be better to respectably marry a wealthy man.Cassandra: This idea has of course occurred to Rose but she has always hoped that the man would be handsome, romantic and lovable into the bargain. I suppose it was her sheer despair of ever meeting any marriageable men at all, even hideous poverty-stricken ones, that made her suddenly burst into tears.
- The Mortmain's landlord used to send them a ham at Christmas.Cassandra: He died last November and we have sadly missed the ham.
- An exchange between Thomas and Rose.Rose: I feel grim. I haven't an clothes, I haven't any prospects. I live in a mouldering ruin and I've nothing to look forward to but old age.Thomas: Well, that's been the outlook for years. Why has it suddenly got you down?
