Funny / Gundam Build Fighters Try

Go To

Like its predecessor, Gundam Build Fighters Try is not short of the giggles department. Still, Spoilers Inbound. Proceed at your own risk.

Episode 1

  • The first scene involving Sekai roughing up some thugs in trying to look for where his sister Mirai lives, in a very obvious Shout-Out to Domon's hunt for Kyoji in G Gundam's. first episode. Then a policeman walks in on them, which leads to him getting arrested.
  • When Mirai comes to pick up Sekai from the police station the officers become absolutely lovestruck when she walks in.
  • Fumina shows her model of her Powered GM Cardigan, Sekai was at first, amazed. Cue dramatic cut and he was seen hanging horizontally clinging to the door frame, wanting to leave while Fumina tries to pull him back in. And it gained a simple click on the GM's right arm, as if responding "What are you guys doing???"
    • On the next scene, Fumina is casually explaining to Sekai more about Gunpla battles, while Sekai tied to a chair, totally ignoring his pleas.
  • The scene where Sekai gets a hands-on experience with Gunpla Battle, piloting a Dom until he unknowingly gets out of bounds. Both him and Fumina lunge to save it, both end up on the floor... With Fumina on top.
  • Mr. Ral showing up just in time as always to see Sekai and Fumina versus Miyagi.
  • The battle at the end of the episode, with Sekai and Yuuma fighting all out, is halted by Mirai planting her arms on the battle table and dragging Sekai off, since the teachers are looking for him.
    • Just imagine how it would look like from inside the battlefield. It would look like a giant appeared out of nowhere, giving nightmares to any fans of Attack on Titan
    • The theme (Cerulean by BACK-ON) immediately stops as her hands hit the table to top it all off, adding a layer of hilarity to the whole mess.
  • In a meta-level, Gunpla stores in Japan have had to put up signs stating that the HGUC Dom kit does not come with a Build Burning Gundam inside.

Episode 2

  • The way Sekai introduces himself to the class.
    • And then there's what comes afterward: Fumina offers to have lunch with him, earning him the jealousy of the students infatuated with her. When he realizes that he can't find his lunchbox, Mirai comes to his classroom with it in hand, and he calls her 'sis' as he accepts it - right in front of everyone infatuated with her. Cue the despair from three particular students who called him lucky to be on friendly terms with (and be related to) two gorgeous girls.
  • The Stinger. As Fumina and Sekai ask Yuuma to join the Gunpla Battle club and he continues to relent, Mirai and another female student approach them. Mirai - sparkles and all - asks Yuuma if he's going to rejoin the club and he blindly says yes, awestruck by her. After she walks away, the following exchange happens...
Fumina: Sekai, did you hear that?
    Sekai: Yeah. Absolutely!
A baffled Yuuma stares just long enough for Fumina to get an arm around both one of his and one of Sekai's.
Fumina: Now we have three people!
Sekai: We can enter the championship!
Yuuma: (while being very obviously awkward about it) Ummm...that is...
Sekai, Fumina: Let's do it! Let's play Gunpla Battle!
Both Fumina and Sekai do a mid-air fist pump, while Yuuma is basically dragged along for the ride.
    • Adding to the hilarity is the fact that you just know Mirai deliberately did this to help Sekai and Fumina convince him...the smile on her face as she walks away says it all.
  • Eri Shinoda's Glasses Gotta Go moment; it happens completely without warning, and the effect it has on Miyaga is near-instantaneous.
    • Compounded by the fact that her braids spontaneously unravel themselves into flowing locks as she does so.
    • Fumina briefly wonders if Eri got her Gunpla destroyed easily on purpose just to grab Miyaga's attention(or more accurately, to throw the match so she can "console" him and get his attention off Fuminia).

Episode 3

  • Sekai inheriting Reiji's neutron star-level of denseness right after Gyanko gives him a bento. The puzzled face he makes before the cutaway just sells it.
Yuuma: Sekai, do you understand what this means?
Sekai: Lunch is lunch. What more meaning is there?
Mirai, Fumina and Yuuma sigh in unison.
Fumina: So, you really don't get it...
    Mirai: That's my brother...
    • Even more fun is the track that's playing in the background during this scene to highlight the denseness — Aila ~Reiji's Custom Tsundere~.
    • Great irony in that he had quickly figured out that Yuuma likes Mirai earlier in the episode.
  • Speaking of Yuuma, his cheerful greeting towards Mirai at the beginning of the episode, complete with Bishie Sparkle.
    • Speaking of Yuuma again, it hurts your side a lot watching his sudden friendliness towards Sekai at the beginning, all just to accompany Mirai to school. Even Sekai is disturbed by his sudden change of behavior.
    • Before Sekai and the audience figured out what his objective was, you could say everyone thought Yuuma was gunning for Sekai.
  • Gyanko's expression when she sees the Tatsumaki-Geri was hilarious.
    Kaoruko: WHAT IS THAT TECHNIQUE!?
  • The faces of Team Try Fighters as they realize that the stunning girl next to Miyaga is Eri. Better yet, their expressions as soon as they leave and overhear the pair's plans.
    • Earlier, Fumina and Sekai barge in Daiki's office and prepares to negotiate Yuuma's transfer to the Battle Club. They were expecting a tough negotiation session, with Sekai even prepared to use force on him. It was to their shock that Daiki let him go without another word.
  • The reaction of Team Try Fighters when Ral flashes out his Gouf R35. Fumina and Yuuma immediately gush over how high quality the plamodel is. Sekai, though...
Sekai: "I get that Gouf is the name of the suit, but what does R35 stand for?"
Mr. Ral: "It stands for 'Ral, 35 years old'."
Sekai, Fumina, Yuuma: "35 YEARS OLD!?"
Mr. Ral: "Is there a problem?"
    • This is later followed by the club manager announcing that he'd arranged for a practice battle with St. Odessa. Poor Mr. Ral is obviously saddened by this development. Though given what he does in the finale of Build Fighters, this might be a good thing all on its own.
      • The best part is undoubtedly this line:
"In the middle of a practice, everyone forgot about Ral..."
    • Made even funnier if you recall that in the first season, that was Ral's age and it hadn't changed at all, even though 7 years have passed. It seems Mr. Ral has caught the same symptom as Ash.
      • Or just outright lying about his age (which would make him 42 by Try). No less funny though.
  • Sekai failing at shooting. Frustrated, he then throws the pistol at the practice Mock, and then decides to just leave a hole in its head with a punch.
    • Just the notion of a melee fighter holding a rifle, practicing shooting is hilarious. It's just like imagining a beam rifle equipped on the Shining Gundam, God Gundam and the Master Gundam.
      • Even better in this case, as the gun in question is a dinky little GM beam spray gun.
  • Kaoruko's comment about Sekai and Yuuma not having a hundredth of her big brother's charms comes off as funny when by the end of the episode she has fallen for Sekai.
  • Kaoruko's teammates immediately assuming that the arguing Sekai and Yuuma are flirting.

Episode 4

  • Mr. Ral's butt is itching again. You know what this means.
  • Sekai having no idea what a date is, complete with the most hilarious Face Desk courtesy of Mirai.
Sekai: "By the way...what's a date?"
    Mirai: "SERIOUSLY!?"
  • Mirai trying to tail Sekai and Fumina on their "date" is just full of funny moments.
    • Thinking that Sekai and Fumina are about to kiss when the latter asks the former to close his eyes, she jumps out from behind a Beargguy mascot with a Big "NO!" to boot just when she thinks they're about to do the deed. It turns out that she just wanted to show him the full size Gundam statue at G-Muse.
Mirai: "Sekai, you're rushing up the stairs to adulthood! I think it's too early for you...!"
    • It's rather amusing how both Sekai and Mirai don't understand the difference between Gundam and Gunpla, as well. They both call the 1/1-size Gundam a Gunpla, oblivious to the fact that there has to be a basis for Gunpla in the first place.
    • Trying to prevent Yuuma from seeing Sekai and Fumina, thus interrupting their "date", by asking him if he wants to got drink some tea with her. Yuuma gets too excited at the prospect to even notice the other two.
  • When Fumina and Sekai get excited about the championship, the kids who Sekai was beating earlier think they're about to share a tender moment and wonder out loud if they'll kissThis leads to both denying it out loud while sporting matching luminescent blushes. This becomes a bit more hilarious if you remember Mileina Vashti's notes/hunches about supposed couples who blush while adamantly denying their relationship. It gets funnier when you realize this is the closest Sekai will come to realizing someone likes him (and he likes someone) in this entire series. Especially with the "Boyfriend" blunder below.

Episode 5

  • Mirai is shaping up to be quite the source of hilarity, what with her pouting after seeing both Fumina and Sekai run off to the Gunpla Battle club instead of adding to the Ship Tease...
  • Yuuma lampshades what would have happened if Team Angelfish didn't have a water stage.
  • The entire swim team being charmed by Mirai.
  • Gyanko's reaction to Fumina glomping Sekai(and Yuuma)

Episode 6

  • The episode starts with the explanation of a Team Gunpla Battle, which ended up with Yuuma's lampshading...
Yuuma: Why are we watching this now?
    • The reason: Sekai couldn't understand the rules when explained to him so Fumina opted to show him the video. Speak of the devil, Sekai is asleep on the table.
    • Yuuma's comments on Sekai after this.
Yuuma: Just as anything times zero is zero, anything times idiot is just an idiot.
  • Yuuma's attitude changes 180 degrees again when Mirai returns.
  • Sekai, who is asleep from watching the video, instantly wakes up. The trigger: the word opponent.
  • The confusion that comes from Minato using "reiko", an Osakan regional affectation for iced coffee, and Yuuma assuming that it's a girl's name.
  • Kaoruko dedicated her victory to Sekai, who outright, flatly rejected it.
  • Ral is late, AGAIN.

Episode 7

Episode 8

  • Every single thing about Sakai's dream. It really has to be seen to be believed.
    • What really compounds it is the fact that it becomes blatantly obvious that it's a dream, yet Minato never seems to notice. Whether it's the bevy of Gundam-verse babes (he even lampshades that they look familiar!), his dead master in the audience, Yuuma heaping fawning praise on him, Sekai's ludicrous Henohenomoheji face, or Fumina basically asking for sex in public, Minato acts like this is all perfectly reasonable.
    • Also with emphasis on the viewers' realization on what kind of dream this geeky-pubescent young man has just had that the viewers have been allowed to look into! Ew!
    • Following up on that, his reaction to Team Try Fighters making it into the best four. So much for his smug exterior, huh?
  • Gyanko's Crocodile Tears-reinforced Glomp at Sekai. She even dropped the bottle before going for it.
    • Moreso when the rest of the Try Fighters decide to leave the two behind. Cue Sekai being crushed by the hug as he calls them out.
  • When Sekai was trying to "comfort" Gyanko, she continually acts meek to get a date. When Sekai then blurts out he already went on a date, Gyanko drops the act
    • During the "date" Mahiru and Keiko peep on them and noticably get less excited when Gyanko drops the act.

Episode 9

  • Minato attempting to smooth talk Fumina. He may be a disciple of Mao, but he's definitely trying to become Fellini.
    • When Minato leaves Yuuma's shop, he gulps down someone's drink in retaliation. We then see he drank Sekai's.
  • The "camera" pans across the stadium; you can see each person in the audience looking forward to see the match that will decide who will get to fight in the Nationals, and - wait, are those hearts popping up at the back?!? Aw, its's Miyaga and Eri, still doing some public display! C'mon guys...!
  • Nearly all of Meijin Kawaguchi III's lines. He's as hammy as ever, maybe even hammier.
  • We find out after Akira slapped Yomi for trash talking Team Song Dynasty Vase, Yomi slapped him back so hard you can still see her handprint on his face.

Episode 10

Episode 11

Episode 12

  • Situation: a bunch of normal kids are hanging out in a normal gunpla store. Cue the shop's door opening as Meijin Kawaguchi III walks in completely casually, causing the kids to completely geek out. Without breaking his stride, the Meijin asks the shop's owner to let him use the battle system, which the shocked guy immediately allows. A moment later, the owner reluctantly starts to ask a question, only for the Meijin to interrupt and reply that he'll sign autographs later, again without breaking his stride.
Boy: He replies at three times normal speed too!

Episode 13

  • Fumina found out Sekai is with another girl. She definitely is not impressed. Her reactions as Shia calmly asks Sekai various questions ("Who is she? What's your relationship? Is she your girlfriend?") have to be seen to be truly appreciated. As usual, Sekai remains completely oblivious through it all.
    • Yuuma's deadpan reaction. "So this is youth."
    • Before that, Yuuma comments on Shia being cute and Sekai having good taste in girls for a "martial arts freak", still calm but sounding impressed...then momentarily forgetting that Fumina is still right beside him, ready to explode from jealousy.
  • It seems that Mr. Ral's "Love in the air detector itch" is contagious. And Yuuma has contracted it.

Episode 14

  • Gyanko shows up while Team Try Fighters are upgrading their Gunpla to help Sekai upgrade Build Burning Gundam. She then proceeds to try to attach the Gyan's shield to everything. Fumina is NOT amused.

Episode 15

  • You can't help but to laugh at Meijin Kawaguchi III and Lady Kawaguchi antics and posing at the Gunpla Memorial Park, announcing the location of the National Tournament, in the EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING WHERE NOBODY IS WATCHING.
  • Virtually every scene with Sakai in it is comedy gold. From his ranting about having a cool reunion with Yuuma, to Yuuma interrupting him, to him nearly spilling the beans about his Gunpla in order to impress Fumina. It has to be seen to be believed.
  • Mirai charming the pants off everyone (mostly guys but there are a lot of girls too) in the audience. Yuuma follows suit, until Fumina and Sekai (both with mischievous expressions on their faces) tell him he's got a crapton of competition now. Cue Color Failure.
    • Even funnier, the visual explosion of hearts emanating from Mirai is not unlike a massive explosion of GN particles (in fact, it's pretty much the Trans-Am Burst from Season 2 Episode 24, except replace mutual understanding with mass attraction) and the sound is that of the original RX-78-2's beam rifle (or the Unicorn's beam magnum for a more recent example of the sound.) It's almost like it's saying Mirai's weaponized her charm without even trying!

Episode 16

  • The combining-transforming sequence of the Gundam Tryon 3.
    • Everyone was speechless by the spectacle, even Large Hams Meijin and Lady Kawaguchi. To top it all off, Meijin hesitated before returning to his usual hammy self. Congratulations, Minato Sakai; you've now become the show's hammiest character yet!
    • This is shortly followed by Yuuma trying to comment on the perceived pointlessness of the whole sequence, Sakai flatly cuts him off before he can finish.
Sakai: You don't understand originality! Go home!
    • But perhaps the most hilarious bit of all: Sekai loved every minute of it.
  • Yuuma's post-round interview with Mirai. His facial expressions were just Adorkable.

Episode 17

  • The start of the episode has even more Clingy Jealous Girl antics from Fumina at Shia. And this time, Gyanko joins in on the action.
    • And of course Sekai's neutron-star denseness about being more interested in why Shia is helping him, despite the fact that it would make him and his team stronger, instead of anything romance-related. When he asks Fumina if she understands Shia's feelings, she affirms, but refuses to divulge further. Yuuma then tries to tell that Fumina is jealous of Shia, only for their team captain to interrupt him.
      • Fair credit to Sekai though, the Try Burning was made from the efforts of his team. No matter how powerful the Gunpla that Shia would create, it would be like throwing dirt in the face of their team effort by receiving another Gunpla from a stranger. Sekai knows this.
    • Then, when team SD-R boasts that they will win, the two defended him immediately, complete with poses. Cue Fumina lamenting that she missed her cue.
  • Speaking of Yuuma, the fact that this episode reveals that he's scared of ghosts. So much than when he heard a part of the castle's walls crumble, his Lightning instantly climbed on top of Try Burning.

Episode 20

  • After having been through a spectacular Gunpla Battle with Sekai, Junya meets up wih Akira (Behind the wheel of a convertible) as the former was leaving Yajima Stadium. All is well and sentimental at first while driving accross the bridge, when Akira reveals that he only got his driver's license two days prior. In the very next moment the car, which had been driving smoothly up to this point, nearly swerves out of its lane. Cue Junya screaming offscreen (along with screeching tires in the background) frantically wanting to get out of Akira's car.
    • What makes this scene even funnier is that the moving insert music comes to a complete stop the second Junya screams "WHAT?!"

Episode 21

  • Yuuma cheers up Fumina by reassuring her that she can be as good as a builder as Sei one day. When Sekai asks if he'll be the same way, Yuuma gives him a blunt "No, never".
  • When all 4 teams are arguing over who will be the winners in the next round, Adou smacks the roulette machine for determining brackets. When it zooms out, the display screen says "ERROR" on it.

Episode 22

  • Minato, in the midst of giving Yuuma his reasons for why he dislikes him, performs a wall slam with his right arm. When he leaves, you can see him fanning that hand as he walks away. The noise he makes while doing it is what sells it.

Episode 23

  • Junya, having experienced Akira's driving skills, gets savvy when the latter offers him a ride again. As always, lots of tire squeal off-screen.
    • Even better when you Ho Yay the exchange of "get in the car", "no, never"
  • Shimon brings Mamoru over to the stadium grounds, where they are met with Gyanko and her teammates from St. Odessa. After gettting praised at by Gyanko, Mamoru quickly asks the inevitable:
Mamoru: So, nii-san... Which of them is your girlfriend?
    • Shimon quickly covering Mamoru's mouth while blushing profusely just sells it.
  • The bickering between Yuuma and Sakai while the two are tuning Team Try Fighters' Gunpla, starting from Sakai praising himself on his kindness and escalating from there. Making it even funnier, the two of them start working faster and faster as they bicker.

Episode 24

Episode 25 (Final Episode)

  • Minato's entry, number 9, is called as the winning entry, and Minato is jumping and cheering for joy...only for Meijin to have the number card upside down and correctly read number 6, Yuuma. Minato has turned to stone in shock, and as Yuuma walks past him, he dissolves into sand.
  • Minato's ultimate Gunpla? "Super Fumina", an MS Girl designed like Fumina dressed as a maid and armed with her Powered GM Cardigan gear! And he thinks it's better than Yuuma's Lightning Zeta Gundam!
    • Considering the work that went into it? It kinda is. The main reason it didn't win is because Minato based it on a real person and didn't ask her permission.
    • He also indirectly calls Fumina fat to her face.
Minato: The best part is that the waist's 10% thinner than the real Fumina.
      Fumina: YOU IDIOT!!
    • Best - or worst - of all, Minato claims the Super Fumina features Clothing Damage, although it's not depicted. What the hell Mr. Sakai.
    • His loss is even funnier when you realize that Fumina had no idea this existed, meaning Meijin immediately knew Sakai didn't get permission even without having to confirm it.
  • Meijin decides that the best way to settle the dispute is... How else? A Gunpla Battle! Cue not only the stage, but the entire room turning into an arena.
  • Fumina's commentary about the Super Fumina, even scolding a few guys who were trying to look up its skirt during the battle. One of them happened to be Akira, who then has Yomi comes up from behind and puts him in a choke-hold,
  • Then Sekai entered the field to help Yuuma in a brand new suit. As it turn out, he went on a training trip with Shia. Hearing this, Fumina and Gyanko immediately enter the field themselves and attack Sekai with raging fits of jealousy, leading to Shia also entering the field. This leads into an all-out battle royale between everyone in attendance!
  • Shia basically spending all her time before and after the brawl trolling Fumina and Gyanko about her trip with Sekai.
    • A case of Fridge Funny and Call Back: Go back to Episode 3, when Miyaga and Eri being talking about building an MS Girl...in a manner that sounded like something else. Thus, one can also imagine Shia and Sekai building a new Gunpla together evokes the same thing.
  • The kicker? Meijin Kawaguchi AND Lady Kawaguchi also get in.
Meijin Kawaguchi: I'm enjoying my second childhood!
    Everyone Else: WHAT?!
    • Then Ral also enters with his new Dom R35 and stops him because he's curious to see how their relationships will unfold.
      Meijin Kawaguchi: Now that's immature!
  • Just when you think the Sazaki family can't get any bigger, it turns out there's a fourth.
    • Just for those who weren't keeping score, comparing the Sazakis to the Zabis would make Susumu (eldest brother) into Gihren, Kaoruko (the only sister) Kycilia, and the two youngest boys into Dozle and Garma...
  • Not only did Kei Karima miss the awards ceremony due to being constipated, but his 1/144 Rafflesia was disqualified for being too large. Then when he enters the huge battle royale with it, he gets absolutely destroyed by a huge group of players (including Toshiya) for being a sore loser and an asshole.
  • Mirai even decided to join in the fun with her Petitgguy! Just the sight of a cute little Petitgguy in the middle of the battle just trying to stay alive is hilarious.
    • What's even better, is that she has to call for Yuuma to save her after a whole flurry of Bugs sent from the Rafflesia ends up coming her way. She's able to just barely dodge two of them but then freaks out when about fourteen of them get sent towards her.
    • Why did she even join the battle? It looked fun.

Island Wars OVA

  • Hoshino Marika going overboard with her Shipper on Deck tendencies, resulting in a very flustered Fumina each time a Ship Tease moment happens.
  • Just the fact that Fumina and Sekai briefly gain personalized speech balloons. Fumina's is a star; Sekai's is the Jigen Haoh Ryu symbol. Seeing the well-known Shining Finger being used in this context is just ridiculous.
  • Yuuma says he can't go test the new Battle System because he's too busy preparing for the Nationals. He's actually helping Mirai out on a modelling shoot. At the same beach where the prototype's test is taking place no less.
    • The absolute hilarity when Yuuma finds out Sekai is on the same island as him and Mirai. As well as him lampshading Sekai's luck with girls
    • When Fumina, Gyanko and Shia come looking for Sekai, Yuuma tries to leave only for Sakai to find him and is absolutely pissed
  • Minato shows off his new kit for Fumina: a Titans-recolored Super Fumina maid variant. He predictably gets knocked on the head for his trouble.
    • Even funnier is the fact that he introduces it as a model he made for the Meijin Cup, proving he's denser than Sekai and Reiji put together since the original Super Fumina got him disqualified.
    • Meta moment: Bandai advertises this very kit as soon as the OVA ends.
  • Fumina, Shia and Gyanko getting into a Newtype moment, only to find out that Sekai had already left.
    • Shia invited Gyanko to the island specifically to spoil any possible romantic moments between Fumina and Sekai. Which is exactly what she did!
    • Their reaction when they see him talking to an unnamed girl is priceless.
    • Shia and Gyanko grilling Sekai for thinking he is a paedophile is priceless too.
  • When a bunch of red lights are moving towards the cast. How they react is hilarious:
    • Sekai, Fumina, Mirai and Satomi with shock
    • Yuuma is so scared, he's glomping Sakai who trying to push Yuuma away.
    • Gyanko is clinging to Sekai with a big smile on her face.
    • Shia moves to cling onto Sekai(a couple seconds after everyone else's reactions) with a calm face and stoic voice.
  • When the group decides to use their Gunpla like the finale of the first season, Satomi is questioning if Mirai is really planning to help. Only for Mirai with the biggest look of squee on her face to give Satomi one of her Bearguys.
  • As the cast takes off. Satomi not being a Gundam fan, calls her gunpla "a cute gunpla" as she freaks out. Everything Satomi does with her gunpla counts, from panicking while pulling out random cute items from its pouch, to getting dragged around by the one useful weapon she finds (which turned out to be Barbatos' mace), to being dragged along by Mirai when she does her version of the Jigen Haoh Ryuu: Senko Majutsu-Geri on the Psyco Gundam mk. II]].
  • Minato brags that they'll easily hold off the Scramble Gundam, only for it to suddenly change the field to a city. Cue Shadow of Impending Doom, and Minato trailing off as he notices the incoming Colony Drop.
  • During the ending montage of the little girl interacting with the other characters, she looks at the Super Fumina ver. Titans Maid that Sakai had built. While Sakai is shown in the background with a prideful expression, an embarrassed Fumina is being restrained by Gyanko.
  • Right after The Stinger, nearly everyone freaks out(in hilariously different ways) when the little girl vanishes, thinking that she's a ghost, just like her dad.
    • There's a hilarious Continuity Nod as Yuuma's face is not only the same one from episode 15, but the same as Sei Iori way back in episode 2!
    • Even funnier is that the song that plays during this scene is the same exact one that is played when Juunya and Akira drive off, "Roots of Happiness" by Elizabeth Elias. It's a heartwarming song, but jeez, it doesn't get respect!
