  • And then as soon as he sees Akeelah come back, he says "Never mind" and quickly spells the word. The judge looks completely confused by this, but still lets him advance without an issue.
  • After they've sat down again, Akeelah thanks him and he complains (paraphrased) "I was about to do a tap dance."
• Derrick-T telling Akeelah to kick Dylan's butt while watching the national bee on TV:
  Derrick-T: B-U-T-T, butt!
• During one bee, Javier is asked to spell "rhesus," the name of a brownish-yellow monkey of India. When he spells the word correctly, he makes monkey noises, much to the audience's amusement.
