Fridge / Tuca & Bertie

Fridge Brilliance:

  • The "I'm Losing My Shit" song. Traditionally, Broadway musicals only have characters sing when their emotions become too over-the-top to be properly conveyed through dialogue. What's more appropriate for that technique than a literal mental breakdown?
  • It makes sense for Speckles' sister to be named Dottie—speckles are just small dots.
  • In "Kyle," Tuca finds her passion controlling the flow of traffic, which makes a lot more sense considering her mother died in a car crash. Even when she orders two cars to smash into each other, it tracks with her coping mechanism of watching car crash videos. Tuca probably craves control over the circumstances that killed her mother.
  • Kara's controlling behavior actually makes more sense with her profession as a nurse - the field has had significant problems with bullying among coworkers for years, and studies have found that people who were bullies as teenagers are more likely to go into fields that grant them a high level of control, to simulate the environment that allowed them significant power over others. The most common of these professions are police officers, teachers, and - especially amongst female bullies - nurses.
  • "Leaf Raking" has Speckle and Bertie reveal that they have no desire to have children, which may appear contradictory to the earlier episode "The Dance" having them attempt to use an app to see what their hypothetical child may look like. However, the previous episode "The One Where Bertie Gets Eaten by a Snake" has a scene where Bertie is forced by a mother to hold her baby and gets puked on by the tot, which might have had a negative effect on Bertie's views on parenthood, with Speckle possibly at some point going through a similar experience off-screen.
    • It’s also likely Speckle just wanted to use the app for the fun of it and wasn’t actually serious about wanting a baby.
    • Heck, it's also possible that Speckle was put off the idea of having children when the app didn't work right and merged his and Bertie's faces into a hideous cyclops.
  • "Fledgling Day" establishes Bertie being annoyed that her mother is more fond of Tuca. After Bertie's mother later commends her daughter for being honest to her about not wanting children, it becomes clear why. Tuca is more open about how she wants to live her life and is generally approachable to everyone, and with Bertie constantly being set back by her nervousness and low self-esteem, Bertie's mother relates more with Tuca.
  • Once Pastry Pete starts to show his true colors in the first season, suddenly the behavior of his bratty nephew in the first episode makes a lot more sense when you consider how his nephew would look up to him as a role model. Alternatively, Pete’s enabling of his nephew could serve as foreshadowing for his more blatant red flags later on down the line.
