Those football players spitting in their own team's drinking water just to spite Bobby comes across as incredibly stupid. Until you remember what Coach Klein said to rile Bobby up "Water sucks. Gatorade is better." They're spitting in the water to make the point that they don't drink it and Gatorade is much better.
Before her epiphany, how does Mama Boucher think Bobby's going to cope when she dies?
She doesn't. She's so caught up on making sure he doesn't go anywhere due to her own abandonment trauma, she doesn't think about things like that.
