Fridge Brilliance

  • Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Astor are established as foils for each other. In an early scene, Mrs. Astor is shown standing beneath her famous and impressively massive portrait. When Russell finally gets to receive Astor, she poses beneath an equally impressive and massive portrait, obviously to position herself as Astor's equal.
  • In Season 2, Agnes brings up to Reverend Forte in her meeting with him that Ada has no money, expecting him to only be interested in Ada because he is a fortune hunter. Forte chuckles, insisting that he loves Ada and money has nothing to do with it. This takes on a whole new significance after the reveal in the season finale that the Forte family is actually very well off. First, it proves Forte truly never cared about the Van Rhijn money, because he'd already given up wealth once to be part of the church. Second, his marriage with Ada makes her the inheritor of his family wealth on his death, which ends up saving Agnes and putting Ada in power. Rather than Ada making Forte rich, Forte is the one who made Ada rich, while Agnes now has little to her name.
