Fridge / The Crown (2016)

  • The portrayal of the (very poor) state of the Parkers' marriage at the beginning of the second series comes after the Margaret/Townsend storyline — and makes you realise that the (unseen) state of Peter Townsend's marriage must have been very similar, as he was also away from his family a lot as a result of his many royal duties (the main difference being that Mrs Townsend sought solace with another man, leading him to divorce her for adultery and not the other way round). In "Hyde Park Corner", Townsend is even shown spending Christmas with the royal family rather than with his own family, after saying earlier in the episode that he planned to spend Christmas with the latter. Being close to the royal family is evidently not good for one's marriage.
  • In "Beryl" Princess Margaret is moved by the toast Prince Philip makes and leaves afterwards. In actual fact, according to protocol, once seated at a dinner no-one may get up from the table to leave until after the royal toast. So this was, in fact, the very first opportunity she would have to leave the dinner.
  • In "Dis Moi Oui", Diana picks up on the fact that Dodi Fayed's speech in which he stands up to his father is actually a Phoney Call. This makes sense, as he's doing the speech in English, whereas the Fayeds usually speak to each other in Arabic.
  • In "Sleep, Dearie Sleep," at first it seems a little odd that middle-aged Elizabeth is the one telling the older Elizabeth to retire in favour of Charles, while younger Elizabeth is telling her to stay the course. But in context, it makes perfect sense: middle-aged Elizabeth's perspective is pragmatic and tempered with her experiences of conflict and turmoil—her sister's and children's unhappy marriages, Margaret's suicide attempt, the Aberfan disaster, the death of Lord Mountbatten—while younger Elizabeth is idealistic and speaking from her struggles of putting her personal identity behind that of the Crown ("if you went looking for Elizabeth Windsor, you wouldn't find her").
