• In the beginning, Mei just smacked a soot gremlin, and probably killed it.
  • It's likely fine if their depiction in Spirited Away is any indication, as one of the soot sprites gets squashed by a lump of coal, with it turning out to be okay and unharmed once Chihiro lifted the lump off of it, just dizzy.
• If the sandal they found wasn't Mei's, is there another missing girl?
  • Here's some retardant for you: You can lose a shoe without losing a whole person.
  • To elaborate: They stopped worrying because there weren't any other girls missing. They weren't worried just because they found a shoe; they were worried because they thought it belonged to someone they already knew was missing. Since it wasn't Mei's, it clearly belonged to someone who wasn't missing, thus there was nothing to worry about.
