    Fridge Brilliance
  • The usage of the Power and Time Gems in the announcement trailer. The Power Gem was first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and the trailer for the sequel came out the same day as the trailer, while the Time Gem was introduced in Doctor Strange, which was the latest MCU movie at the time of the trailer's release.
  • The Space Gem's Infinity Storm creates a cube of sorts around the players opponents. In the MCU, the Space Stone also happens to be the Tesseract or Cosmic Cube.
  • The last big crossover game to feature Marvel heroes was Disney Infinity.
  • Ultron-Sigma has the Reality and Space Gems. Rather fitting for a game that is a crossover between two different universes.
    • Ultron-Sigma's placement of said Gems is also rather noteworthy as Ultron, a Marvel character, gets the RED Reality Gem, and Sigma, his Capcom Equivalent, gets the BLUE Space Gem.
  • Something immediately apparent about X's fighting style is that it is far more upper body-centric than his elder brother Rock's was. The fridge comes in upon realizing that, where Rock had no formal training and was more or less just swinging in the strongest ways he could, X is acquainted with Ansatsuken, and his upper to lower body ratio in move distribution isn't dissimilar from the likes of a formal practitioner like Ryu or Akuma.
  • The Reality Stone being revealed to invoke Combo Platter Powers — mainly Fire, Ice, Lightning. While an obvious Shout-Out to its role in Marvel Super Heroes, it's also a gameplay-wise equivalent to the Stone/Gem's status as the Jack of All Trades among its "brethren". Additionally, Fire, Ice, Lightning are literal forces of nature — i.e., reality.
  • X's discomfort with Rocket Raccoon's comment on his X-Buster may be a bit more layered than it seems. Aside from being a Martial Pacifist that only fights because he has to, consider the fact that his major enemies tend to be bloodthirsty animal-themed robots. Given the "Weapon-Animal" naming conventions of the Mavericks, it's no wonder X isn't too keen about Rocket — save for the fact he's organic, he reminds X of the enemies he constantly has to face. Although in the story proper, it's just Rocket bugging X during a mission briefing, so the analysis only makes sense within the context of the trailer.
  • While X's arsenal of Special Weapons may be small, there's actually a deeper reason why his Special Weapons were chosen as part of his moveset. With the exception of the Boomerang Cutter, all of X's Special Weapons were actually the weaknesses of Sigma's first forms in the games they appeared in (Sonic Slicer in X2, Frost Shield in X3, and Rising Fire in X4). And, considering Ultron Sigma is the first form of the final boss...
    • Electric Spark may be the weakness of Sigma's first form in X1, but considering how similar it is to the X-Buster due to how it acts as a linear projectile, it was likely that Boomerang Cutter was chosen as the representative weapon over it instead.
    • However, in Mega Man X8, a boomerang-like weapon, the Shadow Runner is Copy-Sigma's weakness in that game. It's likely that when selecting his arsenal, X chose the more versatile boomerang weapon between the two to deal with Sigma (in the games, Boomerang Cutter can be fired more than once and retrieve items, whereas Shadow Runner is limited to one per use with no ability to retrieve anything.)
  • Ultron being able to merge with the Sigma Virus without any ill effects makes sense seeing as he has resisted being assimilated and corrupted by sentient computer viruses back in Annihilation Conquest.
  • Ultron-Sigma's speech patterns are very reminiscent of Venom's (ex. "We are Ultron-Sigma!"). Considering that their partnership, by all appearances so far, is one of mutual respect and benefit, one could interpret their Fusion Dance as the logical progression of a symbiotic relationship.
  • Ultron and Sigma being the perfect match for each other: both were created by human scientists with limited grasps in robotics, dangerous, impossible to kill, a nasty habit of returning no matter what, manipulating individuals or groups to suit their own needs, a hellbent desire to wipe out all organic life and rule with metallic lifeforms and crushing any robots that sides with organics. Seems like a match made in hell.
  • Incarnations of Ultron are designated by Ultron-<number>. Therefore, it makes sense to name him Ultron-Σ, with Σ representing the summation of all Ultrons. Not only that, Sigma's various alternate bodies have had prefixes, such as Wolf Sigma or Final Sigma. Ultron-Sigma makes perfect sense as a name for their fused form, acting as the prefix and suffix for each other’s names.
    • On a related note, given the name theme for Iron Man's specialty armors like Hulkbuster and Thorbuster, and X's Arm Cannon - much less the one used by every Mega Man ever, what better name for the Infinity Stone-powered super weapon used against Ultron-Omega than the Infinity Buster?
  • Some of the tag-teams presented in the gameplay trailers make sense.
    • Captain America and Mega Man X - Both are the main protagonists of their respective stories, both have been placed in a deep sleep for decades before awakening in the future, and they both wear the colour blue.
    • Hawkeye and Chris Redfield - Badass Normal characters who rely on weaponry (firearms for Chris, bow and arrow for Hawkeye) instead of superpowers or magic.
    • Doctor Strange and Arthur - Both characters make use of magic in combat. Doctor Strange, being the "Sorcerer Supreme", also wouldn't look out of place in a medieval setting next to Arthur.
    • Rocket Raccoon and Dante - Both are bounty hunters who have noted Motor Mouth tendencies and employ More Dakka through their wide range of firearms.
    • Spider-Man and Frank West - Both are photographers in their day jobs.
    • Gamora and Strider Hiryu- Both are highly skilled assassins and the last of their kind of their own respective groups.
    • Black Panther and Sigma - Both are leaders to a military group of some sort (before Sigma got infected), and both use claws as weapon (in Sigma's case, it's his X2 incarnation).
    • Iron Man and Spencer - Both are ordinary men that enhanced their bodies with machinery.
    • Ghost Rider and Morrigan - Both collect souls, but Ghost Rider only goes after villains who harm the innocent, and Morrigan does so for pleasure.
  • The Space Gem can open portals, and the Reality Gem infinity surge shoots out a projectile in the game. When combined as Ultron-Sigma's level 3 super, it manifests as a portal that launches many projectiles.
  • Gamora may seem like an out-of-the-hat pick and an MCU promotion for Infinite, until you look up her history with the Infinity Stones, particularly the Soul Stone, as well as her connection to Thanos. With Rocket Raccoon (and Groot)'s presence justified by his veteran status, Gamora's major story ties to the Infinity Gauntlet make her a suitable pick to represent the Guardians of the Galaxy.
  • Why does Thanos fight differently in this game compared to his older appearances? His moveset was reliant on using a completed Infinity Gauntlet in his specials and Hypers, which wouldn't be possible here in regular gameplay since a team can only use one Infinity Stone at a time.
  • Thor was paired with Strider Hiryu during their reveal, and it makes a good amount of sense: what is the name of Hiryu's signature Level 3 Hyper Combo? Ragnarok.
  • Two of Iron Man's specials from the previous games were reworked into new moves here (Repulsor Blast to Repulsor Blades, Smart Bomb to Smart Mine). Given Tony Stark's own obsession with improving his armor (although why he's waited this long to do so is beyond us), it would make sense to retool his movelist and experiment like the scientist that he is.
  • Why were Captain Marvel and Dante the ones used for the final battle? Aside from being two of the strongest characters of their respective universes, Captain Marvel literally has the name "Marvel" on her name to represent Marvel and Dante has always been seen as one of Capcom's beloved characters. While Captain America and Ryu could have been poster boys of each side, and Iron Man and X are two of the most popular, the latter duo are busy and the former aren't strong enough to handle Ultron Omega (plus Ryu was previously drained of his Satsui no Hado powers by Thanos). Captain Marvel and Dante, on the other hand, are not only representing both Marvel and Capcom, but their powers are more than a match for Ultron Omega. That and Dante was the one that manages to turn the tide of the battle by giving Ultron-Sigma the Soul Stone only to have it backfire on Ultron-Sigma.
    • As a way to extend on this idea, Iron Man and X ultimately end Ultron Omega, the two most popular characters on each respective universe. It's also fitting that the two most technologically advanced heroes would defeat the two most technologically advanced villains; all more so considering the rivalry both heroes have with each half of Ultron-Omega.
  • One of Ryu's costumes is a composite between Evil Ryu and Asura. Rather appropriate, since the latter clashed with Ryu in one of his game's DLC episodes.
  • In the official character guide videos, X and Zero are paired with the Mind Stone. Fitting considering they're robots who have autonomous thinking. It also helps that in their native games, both have special features that affect the Sigma Virus's effect on them. X's brain has security circuits that protect his mind from being corrupted by viruses (in games where it's attempted, he just takes damage, instead). Zero has immunity due to being the virus's original vector.
  • The Soul Stone surge can bypass armored attacks. Why? Because it's the Soul Stone. There is no true defense against an attack on the soul.
  • Back when's the DLC episodes of Asura's Wrath came out, many people thought that Evil Ryu taking on Asura was horribly stretching how strong the former was. With how Thanos completely ignores the Infinity Stones after acquiring the Satsui No Hado, which he deems enough to kill Mistress Death, it's not so unbelievable now to think that Ryu can take on Asura. Which is also kind of a Fridge Horror since Ryu was effectively a ticking time bomb until he obtained the Mu No Ken (Power of Nothingness).
  • Ultron-Sigma looks to be mostly Ultron with Sigma's features and a small amount of his moves tacked in. The story mode then gives a reason: Their first step of merging was done by Ultron contracting Sigma Virus. So yes, the base body IS Ultron to begin with, with Sigma's traits coming after.
  • Ultron's winquote is "I am the summit of perfection in this universe." Now what is "summit" usually called in math terms? It's Sigma.
  • It would make sense for both Ryu and Hulk to (somewhat) get along, they both have cases of severe anger issues.
  • Winter Soldier's Rifle Burst special move can be done from a neutral position, or from his Metal Shield stance, during which he extends his cybernetic arm to deflect incoming attacks. Since he only has one arm free in the stance, he's forced to fire his assault rifle one-handed, which results in multiple short bursts (due to the recoil), as opposed to the one long burst when he uses the move outside of the Metal Shield stance (i.e., using both arms).
  • X's epic confrontation with Zero in the story mode holds more weight than it seems in a Meta sense - you are fighting the only Mega Man character from the entire Versus series to return in Infinite (To wit, Zero has fought alongside every single character from the series save for one, the original Mega Man.) Fitting then, that with X being the newest character in the fold, that you would be initiated by fighting one of its longest standing veterans.
  • Ultron-Sigma's theme takes more after Ultron's theme than it does with Sigma's, likely referencing the fact that this form fights more similarly to the former. Ultron-Omega's, on the other hand, is the inverse: Sigma's theme is more dominant since they now fight more like a traditional Sigma One-Winged Angel form. The balance between how much each of their own individual themes shifts between the two of them as well; both get sampled relatively equally as Ultron-Sigma only for Sigma's theme to take more control as Ultron-Omega, possibly due to both undergoing a rapid Villainous Breakdown at the time.
    • Lastly, Ultron-Sigma's theme is akin to how Ultron's theme would sound if done in the style of the Capcom cast, whose music is faster and more techno-based. Inversly, Ultron-Omega's theme is Sigma's own remixed according to the orchestral themes of the Marvel side.
  • It may seem very odd to a Mega Man X player that X's Level 3 Hyper Combo uses the Ultimate Armor, but instead of doing something like hitting the opponent multiple times with its signature Nova Strike attack, he just uses that to fling the opponent upwards and fires a beam laser, something that the Ultimate Armor does not actually do. So why does this Hyper play out the way it does? It's actually a Call-Back to Mega Man X8's Team-Up attack system, where upon triggering it, the player lets out a forcefield that initiates a barrage from your two characters upon contact (not unlike how X starts up his own Level 3 Hyper). With that said, what is X's Team-up attack in that game? A giant beam laser.
  • Dante is half-right about Ultron-Sigma. Ultron is a soulless robot. Sigma, however, is not. Reploids having souls is a recurring plot point in the Mega Man X series, and Sigma now exists entirely in soul form as the Sigma Virus. So when Ultron-Sigma tries to activate the Soul Stone, it's power combines with that of the Space and Reality stones to alter Ultron-Sigma's physical form to better reflect the only soul present within the merger.
  • When handing the Mind Stone to X, Spider-Man remarks that the Stone is "definitely his color"; X's blue and the Mind Stone's yellow just so happen to coincide with the colors of none other than Capcom themselves.
  • In Spider-Verse, the Spider-Man from the Vs. games is one of the casualties (confirmed by Dan Slott on Twitter). So, why is he alive here? Well, either Capcom didn't get the memo that he's supposed to be dead...or they did get the memo and didn't care and decided to use Spidey anyways.

    Fridge Horror
  • Bad enough Sigma acquired knowledge of the Infinity Stones from Ultron. Now imagine if other Capcom villains had gotten wind of that same information. Chaos would ensue along with fierce competition from Marvel villains. The heroes from both universes would have their hands full trying to keep the Stones from every dictator, madman, and would-be-god. Case-in-point: the implications of someone like Jedah, one of the most powerful Darkstalkers around, wielding the Stones for his own gain.
    • He does end up with the Soul Stone during story mode. He uses it to infuse a corrupted klyntar with the souls of the million killed by Ultron and Sigma when they merged their worlds together.
  • So, by the end, exactly how screwed is everything?, considering Thanos, a Physical God, has the SATSUI NO HADOU (and is confident enough in it's powers that he feels he can kill Death herself).
    • How confident is he about the Satsui no Hado? He tosses aside the Infinity Stones to allow the heroes to use against Ultron-Sigma. You know, the Infinity Stones, the things he once used to search in order to almost destroy the universe!
  • Thanos calls out both Iron Man and Dr. Light for creating bloodstained legacies in the name of peace, claiming that Thanos is not so different from both of them:
    • For Tony, it's attacking other superheroes due to paranoia that his armor schematics might be copied, being brainwashed and controlled by Kang the Conqueror, created an A.I. armor with unhealthy tendencies which included raping Jocasta, Robot Girl and fellow Avenger to Tony, made several attempts of killing Stark himself, and joining forces with Ultron into brainwashing a benevolent cult based on Stark's mentor and father figure Ho Yinsen, had his morality inverted by Red Onslaught and infected people with an Extremis-Symbiote hybrid virus, and participating in two superhero civil wars which left them vulnerable to Skrulls, Norman Osborn, and Hydra.
    • For Thomas, it's the creation of X himself which leads him to be imperfectly copied, which leads to the Maverick problems that also included Sigma, which led to the Maverick Wars, which led to the Cyber Elf Wars and the second Maverick Wars, which led to the creation of Biometals with its own brand of problems and by the time of Mega Man Legends, "baseline" humanity is all but extinct and replaced by Carbons yet there are remnants of humanity who want Earth back in the worst way possible.
  • Captain America states that they have all lost allies and friends. Now think of the Capcom and Marvel characters that don't appear in this game. How many of them don't because they're dead?
