The movie ends on a seemingly satisfactory note as the psycho cop Abel is killed and will no longer torment his neighbors. Later on, you realize his children are now orphans.
The ending of The Island contains a similar consequence.

Abel was a ticking time bomb who finally went off at the end. As a threat to himself and everyone around him, he really should have no place raising his children.
Considering that Abel's cop friends did nothing to stop Abel's corrupt actions, that says a lot about Abel's friends.

It's cited on the first page how implausible it would be Abel to afford his house on a beat cop's salary, but not if his late wife had a life insurance policy.
