In the short story it is mentioned that when Anthony saw a wife leaving the cemetery missing her dead husband that Anthony made him come back (still dead) and follow her home. Anthony is mentioned to have wished many people and animals dead into the cornfield. But if he can bring them back just as easily are they actually aware or just puppets made by Anthony?
One day, Anthony's just going to kill everybody. It could be gradual, once a day he messes someone up and wishes them into the cornfield. Or he could get sick or just feel angry and just wipe out the entire town out of a vague sense of frustration. This could either be a good thing or bad thing depending upon just how absolute his control over their minds and souls are. Since it was implied that Anthony didn't really "bring back" the woman's husband, just made a shambling corpse walk to her house, they may be free once their dead. As morbid as it is, it's a ray of hope.
