The end of the series reveals that First Recon's entire mission was a feint to draw the Iraqis away. This retroactively explains why they were so under-supplied in the early episodes - the supplies were diverted to the true attack. It also points to the scope of the operation. With so many troops being deployed from other parts of the world, and some of them (such as First Recon) being normally dedicated to different missions from what they served, there was a lot of last-minute scrambling around for even relatively essential supplies that they wouldn't have had at hand normally.
Lt. Fick’s constant refrain of “I am assured of that” isn’t blind optimism, but rather his way of presenting a calm and collected image to the men under him.
