The revelation that the cause of Spontaneous Human Combustion is a person's Doppelgänger, a sort of collective consciousness reflection of the individual, crossing over from the Adolla realm to Earth and basically taking over the body with the outside influence paints a number of incidents in a sort of surreal, retroactive horror combined with brilliance in other regards. The widower who became an Infernal early in the series? He was a perfectly normal man whose Doppelgänger was likely not able to take him over totally thanks to other's perceptions of him. Meanwhile other people like the serial killer early on who indulged in becoming an infernal basically became what the public considered him. Ironically, someone like Shinra's doppelgänger is strangely tame by comparison for reasons unknown.
