- The ending. Alfred Hitchcock's style of suspense was based on an implicit acknowledgment of the audience. He'd give us crucial pieces of information long before the characters learned it or play around with our expectations of what will happen and generally tell the story in a way that involved the audience. So having the final shot of his final film be a character Breaking the Fourth Wall and winking at us was a perfect way to close out his career.
