Fridge Brilliance

  • Why is Grace so happy that AJ gave her a ring with a tiny stone? She's been put off by big, shiny rocks given Rockhound's tactic of hitting on women via their fake engagement rings seems to be a well-practiced routine.
    • Or she's happy because the man she loves proposed to her? Growing up around roughnecks, she probably doesn't see a lot of other women and would be less inclined to show off a big diamond.
Fridge Logic
  • Wouldn't it be vastly easier to train astronauts to use a drill than to train drillers to become astronauts?
    • Quote Ben Affleck from the commentaries: "I asked Michael why it was easier to train oil drillers to become astronauts than it was to train astronauts to become oil drillers and he told me to shut to the fuck up. So, that was the end of that talk. [...] I mean, this is a little bit of a logic stretch, let's face it. 'They don't know jack about drilling'? How hard can it be? Aim the drill at the ground and turn it on!"
      • Alternately, letting the astronauts focus on flying the shuttles and the oil drillers focus on drilling was probably the most realistic part of the movie. NASA had already spent eight months training the very astronauts who end up flying to the asteroid to utilize high-performance drills for a Mars mission and they still suck at it so badly they couldn't even keep the drill running - Stamper's drill, which they stole because "Patents don't apply to outer space". As Stamper puts it, "All they gotta do is drill. No spacewalkin', no crazy astronaut stuff." Rockhound actually says he's a "Mission Specialist."
      • It seems like the NASA drill was failing because they changed it so heavily from Harry's design, most likely to make it lighter for transport (hence the mention of needing to get rid of all the plastic components).

How well does it match the trope?
