Originally a critically acclaimed and commercially successful magical girl anime, the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise has branched out to include a number of manga, movies, and video games.

The franchise is the creation of Magica Quartet, made up of writer Gen Urobuchi, director Akiyuki Shinbo, character designer Ume Aoki, and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami. The original series is produced by Aniplex and Studio Shaft.

The franchise contains the following series:

Main Series

  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie — a trilogy of animated movies:
    • Beginnings — the first part of a film adaptation of the anime. (Shown internationally in 2012)
    • Eternal — the second part of the anime's film adaptation. (Shown internationally in 2012)
    • Rebellion — the true sequel to the anime. (Shown internationally in 2013)
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising — sequel film to Rebellion. (Set for release in 2024)
  • Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story — An anime adaptation of the video game mentioned below.

Manga adaptations and Expanded Universe Spin-Offs

  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica — the anime's manga adaptation. (3 volumes, released 2011 in Japan and 2012 in the US)
  • Puella Magi Kazumi Magica — the anime's first spin-off, featuring a different cast of characters in the same universe. (Originally serialized from 2011-2012. Collected into 5 volumes and released 2011-2013 in Japan and 2013-2014 in the US)
  • Puella Magi Oriko Magica — the anime's second spin-off, featuring both new characters and characters from the anime. (2 volumes, released 2011 in Japan and 2013 in the US)

  • Puella Magi Tart Magica: The Legend of "Jeanne d'Arc" — a spin-off released after the premiere of the Rebellion movie featuring Jeanne d'Arc. (Originally serialized from 2013-2017. 5 volumes, released 2014-2017 in Japan and 2015-2017 in the US.)
  • Puella Magi Suzune Magica — the third spin-off released after the premiere of the Rebellion movie, starring another cast of characters. (3 volumes, released 2013-2014 in Japan and 2015-2016 in the US. Content from volumes 2 and 3 was originally released in serial format; serialization lasted from 2013 to 2014.)
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Homura's Revenge! — a spin-off that takes place during one of the anime's timelines, a What If? story that shows what would happen if Madoka and Kyubey both remembered the events of one of Homura's failed timelines. (2 volumes, released 2013 in Japan and 2015 in the US)
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Wraith Arc — the seventh manga spin-off, an interquel depicting the events between the anime and Rebellion. (Originally serialized from 2015-2016. Three volumes, 2015-2016 in Japan and 2021-? in the US.)
