The Double Dragon franchise started in 1987 with the original Double Dragon I arcade game, essentially kick-starting the Beat 'em Up genre. In it, the Lee brothers (Billy and Jimmy) have to rescue a girl named Marian from some gangsters. Many sequels and ports for other consoles came later, eventually dying down.
In this short period, several other versions of the story came about in various formats. An animated series aired in 1993 and 1994, while an In Name Only feature film was released in 1994. A comic series also existed, wherein the brothers' dad was Stan Lee. Need we say more?
