Yakuza Apocalypse is an Action Horror movie by Takashi Miike.

Genyo Kamiura (Lily Franky) is a Yakuza boss who's been protecting the people of his neighbourhood for a long time with the help of his enforcers, including one Akira Kageyama (Hayato Ichihara). This has earned him much admiration from the locals. What no one knows, however, is that Kamiura is secretly a vampire who's also been feeding on the very people he has been protecting. He doesn't attack his underlings, however... because vampires don't like Yakuza blood.

One day, however, things change in the town when an English-speaking priest (Ryushin Tei) and martial artist "Mad Dog" Kyoken (Yayan Ruhian) show up in town demanding Kamiura return to a syndicate he had apparently left. Kamiura refuses and engages Mad Dog in a battle, which Mad Dog wins and finishes by ripping Kamiura's head off. In his final moments, Kamiura's severed head bites Kageyama, passing his vampirism on to the enforcer.

From there, events begin to transpire that'll change everything in the town.

The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21st, 2015.

Yakuza Apocalypse contains examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: "Mad Dog" was also the nickname of Yayan Ruhian's character in The Raid Redemption.
  • Agony of the Feet: In one scene, when visiting an underground knitting shop, the owner has all the men their put their right feet out so he can stomp on them.
  • Batter Up!: In one scene, Kaeru-kun grabs a baseball bat and starts beating people with it.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Plenty of this example to spare thanks to all the action scenes.
  • Cross Counter: The final fight between Kageyama and Mad Dog is them doing this to each other over and over until Mad Dog collapses.
  • Daywalking Vampire: All of the vampires in this movie can move about in broad daylight with no problems.
  • Frog Men: Kaeru-kun, who wears a full-body frog costume. He's an actual frog-headed man under the costume, too.
  • Handguns: Quite a few are used in the movie. At the start, a Yakuza boss shoots Kamiura several times. Since Kamiura's a vampire, though, they're not all that effective.
  • Important Haircut: After Kageyama turns Masaru into a vampire, Masaru rips off his hair into a shorter cut, indicating he's done being a coward.
  • Kaiju: After Kageyama's battle with Kaeru-kun, he removes the bandage from Kaeru-kun's belly button, which ends up awakening a mountain-sized fire-breathing version of Kaeru-kun wearing a crown on its head.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: In the start of the movie, Kamiura is seen slicing up a bunch of rival Yakuza with a simple katana.
  • Kappa: One of these appears in the knitting class after Kamiura is killed.
  • No Ending: Kageyama and Kyoko look up and see a kaiju-sized version of Kaeru-kun. Kageyama shape shifts into a human-bat hybrid monster and flies up toward it, and... roll credits.
  • Off with His Head!: After defeating Kamiura in combat, Mad Dog grabs his head and twists it several times before finally ripping it off his shoulders.
  • One-Man Army: Kamiura at the start of the movie. He slices up a building full of Yakuza with a katana.
  • Outside Ride: Masaru, while attacking mobsters, gets up on top of their car, and manages to stay standing on it while they're driving.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: After Angus' brother wins a battle, he gives him a thumbs up... and then falls over.
  • Yakuza: Naturally. Kageyama's the head of one.
