Tropes for the film:

  • The '60s: Takes place in 1967.
  • Historical Domain Character:
    • Burt Munro, New Zealander motorcycle racer.
    • Rollie Free, American motorcycle racer.
  • Home by Christmas: Munro picks up a hitchhiking American airman who's on leave. The airman describes how they're going to start using something called "Agent Orange" in Vietnam, and it should end the war in six months.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: After singing "You Are My Sunshine" Burt has a heart attack.
  • Tagline: "Based on one hell of a true story".
  • Vehicle Title: The World's Fastest Indian. Indian refers to the brand of Burt's motorcycle.
  • What a Piece of Junk: Equally applied to the rebuilt motorcycle and its elderly, unathletic rider. Both perform (almost) flawlessly on race day.
