A 1955 WW II Drama directed by John Farrow that follows a German captain (John Wayne) trying to take his ship home through several Allied warships.

The movie also stars Lana Turner, David Farrar, Lyle Bettger, Tab Hunter, James Arness, Dick Davalos, John Qualen, Alan Hale Jr., and Paul Fix.

It was released on June 4, 1955.


Tropes for the film:

  • Embarrassing Tattoo: A sailor from a German vessel meets some British sailors in a neutral port during World War II, and to show there's no hard feelings they take him out drinking. He wakes up with a huge Union Jack tattooed on his back with the words BRITTANNIA RULES THE WAVES.
  • The Film of the Book: Based on Andrew Geer's 1948 novel of the same name.
  • Still Wearing the Old Colors: The movie is about Karl Ehrlich, a German captain, trying to get his ship back home from Australia after World War 2 breaks out. However he's always been anti-Nazi so when an Allied warship finally corners him he runs up the German Imperial flag instead of the Nazi one.
  • Tagline: "The elusive Sea Captain and his blonde woman in an explosive, suspense-packed story of high daring on the high seas!".
