Seed of Chucky is the fifth film in the Child's Play series, and the last of the Mancini-written series to be released in theaters, on November 12, 2004.
Series creator Don Mancini directs, and once again focuses more on comedy. Six years have passed since the events of Bride of Chucky. Glen, the son of Chucky and Tiffany born during the events of the previous film, makes a meager living as a ventriloquist's dummy and dreams of meeting his famous parents. He successfully tracks the dolls to Hollywood and revives them. They have somewhat unique approaches to parenthood. Now they want to have some family fun, with Tiffany intending to possess actress Jennifer Tilly who portrayed her on screen.
This film provides examples of:
- Accent Relapse: Jason Flemyng uses an American accent at first, but reverts to his English when the Chucky prop malfunctions.
- Actor Allusion:
- John Waters plays a photographer, just like the titular character of his film Pecker. His death, involving acid getting splashed on his face, is similar to what happens to Dawn Davenport in his film Female Trouble, where she gets splashed with acid, scarring her face. Unlike Waters' character, Dawn survives.
- Jennifer Tilly's lobbying for the part of the Virgin Mary echoes a scene from a Christmas Episode of Family Guy. In the episode, her character, Bonnie Swanson, plays the part of Mary in a play about the nativity.
- Adam Westing: Jennifer Tilly plays herself, longing to go against type and willing to sleep with the director to play the Virgin Mary.
- Ambiguous Gender: Due to literal Barbie Doll Anatomy, Chucky and Tiffany can't tell whether their child is a boy or girl. Chucky decides it's a boy called Glen and Tiffany, a girl called Glenda. The child decides on being a boy.
- Armor-Piercing Question: After seeing Chucky and Tiffany gleefully murder someone, Glen asks them "Why do you kill people?" Apparently, no one has ever asked them this question and it's not something they were ever prepared to answer. Chucky eventually stammers "It's a hobby really, it helps us relax" and claims killing is "A time honored family tradition for generations." This is what makes Tiffany believe she and Chucky have to stop killing, for their child's sake. It, of course, goes poorly for all involved.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
- The nanny points out that Glenda punched a kid's nose, took pictures of it and showed it for show-and-tell, called the cat the c-word, and possibly stole money from her purse.
- "You killed my mummy and daddy. And now you're pissing your pants. You're pissing your pants! YOU'RE PISSING YOUR PANTS!!!"
- As Herself:
- Jennifer Tilly. Doubles as a Celebrity Paradox (she portrayed the living Tiffany in the previous film, and provides her voice after she died and her soul was transferred into a doll). According to Mancini, the script was written so that no lines would have to be changed if Tilly was still overweight.
- Redman has decided to branch out from the music industry into film-making.
- Special effects technician Tony Gardener* getting killed off at the beginning.
- Jason Flemyng plays himself starring in the same movie as Chucky and Tiffany.
- Asshole Victim:
- The
Love to Hate photographer Pete Peters stalking Jennifer Tilly and taking pictures of her, her boyfriend, and Chucky masturbating. - Tiffany also eventually gets fed up with what a self-serving asshole Redman is and offs him through disembowelment.
- The
- Author Avatar: Openly gay director Don Mancini (who wrote the previous Chucky films) admits that Glen(da) is himself when he was struggling with his own sexuality as a kid.
- Ax-Crazy: Glenda counts too. To the point that she managed to freak out Chucky of all people.
- Badass Boast: Chucky delivers the best one in this movie:Chucky: Everybody just...SHUT UP!!! I have had it! That's it! There's a limit to how much I can take!Tiffany: What are you talking about?Chucky: Look around you, Tiff! This is nuts! And I have a very high tolerance for nuts. If this is what it takes to be human, then I'd rather take my chances as a supernaturally-possessed doll! It's less complicated that way!Tiffany: You can't be serious.Chucky: As a heart attack! Think about it, Tiff! What's so great about being human anyway? You get sick! You get old! You can't get it up anymore. I'm not looking forward to that!Tiffany: But...I want to be Jennifer Tilly. I want to be a star.Chucky: And I don't wanna be your chauffeur! As a doll, I'm fucking infamous! I'm one of the most notorious slashers in history and I'm not going to give that up. I am Chucky, the killer doll! And I dig it! I have everything I want! A beautiful wife, a multi-talented kid. This is who I am, Tiff! This is me!
- The Bad Guy Wins:
- At the end, Tiffany successfully takes over Jennifer Tilly's body. If you take into account that Jennifer Tilly portrayed Tiffany in human form in the previous film... one might arrive into the assumption that Tiffany regained her old body.
- It turns out Chucky survived his hacking - an unknown person has mailed Chucky's arm to Glen, which then grabs Glen by the neck and presumably strangles Glen, though the television series does eventually reveal that he survived the assassination attempt.
- Be Careful What You Wish For:
- Chucky wanted his son Glen to be a serial killer just like him. In the end, Glen does gain the urge to kill.... Chucky, because seeing his mother get hacked with an axe after she dumps Chucky is what gets him triggered. Glen even asks if he's proud of his boy now.
- Tiffany wanted a daughter. Then she meets her secret daughter Glenda, who is an Ax-Crazy psychopath who can frighten even Chucky of all people.
- Beleaguered Assistant: Joan, who is forced to run around for Jennifer all the time.
- The Big Damn Kiss: Chucky and Tiffany have one being overjoyed of being brought back to life by Glen.
- Big "NO!":
- Glen when he tries to save the paparazzi Pete Peters from his own father Chucky. Instead, his screams of "NOOO!!" frightened the man into a shelf full of acid strong enough to completely dissolve his face. Thus, Glen accomplished killing the man in an even more gruesome death than Chucky had hoped for, and thus Chucky is very satisfied with the result.
- Tilly as she begs Chucky when he decides to slaughter her with his knife so that Tiffany (who just broke up with him) can't possess her.
- Big "SHUT UP!": Chucky delivers one near the end when he can't take anymore of everyone screaming at the same time.
- Break the Cutie:
- Chucky pulls this on Glen over and over, starting with insulting his appearance (when Chucky himself isn't such a lovely sight to see), egging on the poor boy to embrace becoming a serial killer because it runs in the family's blood, forcing him to murder a paparazzi scumbag, and then hacking up his mother Tiffany right in front of her own son at the end.
- Tiffany is also guilty of this towards Glen. Not as much as Chucky, but still her own murder and trying to dictate that he be a girl and not a boy aggravates Glen psychologically.
- Broken Pedestal: Jennifer Tilly is Tiffany's favourite actress - and is shocked when she discovers that Jennifer is trying to get a part by sleeping with the director.
- Call-Back: In Bride, Chucky suggests to Tiffany that because both of them are too short to drive a car, he could steer the wheel and she work the pedals, but they both shoot that idea down as outlandish. Here, he really does implement that plan, but with Glen on the pedals. And he also gets to "Floor it" like he wanted back in Child's Play 2.
- Calling the Old Man Out: Glen does this after Chucky mistakes him for Glenda.Chucky: Glenda?Glen: "No, dad! It's me, your boy! Your chip off the old block! You proud of me now, daddy?! Are ya?!" (says this while chopping Chucky up with an ax)
- Casting Gag: Joan is a low-level assistant who is desperately writing fan mail to celebrities. She's played by Hannah Spearritt, who had just come off her time in S Club 7, a worldwide famous pop group.
- Celeb Crush:
- Tiffany is a huge fan of Jennifer Tilly to the point she wants to literally become her and steal her identity to live the lavish lifestyle of a Hollywood movie star.
- Chucky after tying up Tilly to her bed tries to grope her breasts before Tiffany intervenes.
- Celebrity Casualty: Brittany Spears is killed when Chucky runs her off the road. Also, Jennifer Tilly's soul is transferred to a doll which is then hacked to death by Chucky. Mention is also made of Martha Stewart being put to death.
- Celebrity Resemblance: Jennifer Tilly most prominently, as it seems that the real-life Tiffany just so happened to both look and sound exactly like her. Also underplayed with Brad Dourif, as he apparently exists in-universe to voice Chucky in the film-within-film.
- Children Are Innocent: This movie takes place in a Crapsack World World of Jerkass where the only good soul appears to come from Glen, but the ending proves otherwise he can be just as violent as Chucky wanted.
- Coming-Out Story: Openly gay director Don Mancini, who wrote all of the films, stated that Glen's sexually confused character was a metaphor for his own coming out.
- Covers Always Lie: The poster makes it look like Glen is still a baby when in the movie proper, he's five.
- Creative Closing Credits: A montage of each character's most prominent moments throughout the film, culminating in their death if applicable. Special mention goes to Jennifer Tilly and Billy Boyd being listed twice as herself/Tiffany and Glen/Glenda respectively.
- Creator In-Joke: On the film set, Tiffany's arm comes loose and grabs the floor manager's crotch. In Bride of Chucky, Jennifer Tilly joked on the
DVD Commentary that the Chucky puppet kept grabbing her breasts. - Deadpan Snarker: Chucky, especially.Tiff: Well, I'm not getting pregnant again! Like my mother always said, once is a blessing, twice is a curse.Chucky: Well that would explain your sister.
- Debating Names: After their child has brought them back to life, Chucky and Tiffany have to give him a name since they couldn't tell by his gender. Tiffany wants to call their child "Glenda" thinking it's a girl, while Chucky names him "Glen".
- Denser and Wackier: Bride of Chucky already took a more horror/comedy direction, but this movie turns it up to eleven.
- Despair Event Horizon: Glen loses it when Chucky kills Tiffany.
- Dinky Drivers: It actually comes into play.
- Disproportionate Retribution:
- Tiffany disembowels Redman when Jennifer Tilly states that Redman may have caused her to become pregnant.
- She also kills the nanny when she belittles her daughter, even though she has been doing terrible things.
- Doting Parent: For a serial killer, Tiffany is indeed a very caring and loving mother to Glen(da) as she works to suppress her Ax-Crazy mentality to be a good role model.
- Downer Ending: Tiffany relapses back into her habits of killing innocent people out of sadistic pleasure after trying to quit on that and become a normal woman. Most likely having to raise her Ax-Crazy daughter Glenda could've triggered that relapse.
- Dude, Not Funny!: Tiffany's response to Chucky calling Glen such an ugly abomination his parents must be hiding when the two first meet Glen.
- Ethnic Menial Labour: Jennifer hires a Mexican nanny for her twins at the end.
- Even Evil Has Standards:
- "Paparazzi scumbag!"
- The scene where Glenda's persona reveals herself. Chucky spent most of the movie trying to get Glen to embrace his "Heritage" as a killer like his parents but is openly freaked out by Glenda's insanity. Tiffany seems to feel the same way, and when she asks what Chucky did to Glen he's actually offended by the idea this is his fault. He's also shocked when Tiffany smacks their kid to get them to calm down.
- Every Car Is a Pinto: Evidently the case with Britney Spears and her Mercedes Benz SL 500.
- Evil Twin:
- Jennifer gives birth to twins - Glen and Glenda. Glen is said to be "an angel", while Glenda is rotten.
- Tiffany states, "My mother always told me: Once is a blessing, twice is a curse" [regarding childbirth]. Chucky replies, "Well that explains your sister".
- Fainting: Chucky when realizing he made a son who he first started insulting as ugly and deformed.
- The Family That Slays Together: Chucky (father), Tiffany (mother), and Glen(da) (child) kill people together, though Glen(da) isn't really into it like his/her parents are.
- Final Girl: Jennifer Tilly. Subverted in that Tiffany successfully takes over Miss Tilly's body at the end.
- Going Cold Turkey: Tiffany vows to stop killing people to be a great mother figure to Glen so that the Doll family can be a normal family. Though easier said than done when Tiffany observes and gets angered by Redman's grotesque misogyny and horrible mistreatment of Jennifer. The ending shows that Tiffany is showing signs of relapse and going back to her old habits starting with her Mexican nanny.
- Gratuitous Japanese: Spoken by Glen/Glenda. Apparently justified by his doll being made in Japan.
- "Here's Johnny!" Homage: Played for Laughs. Chucky makes his way into the room Tiffany and Glen are in by breaking through the door with an axe, but when he positions himself like Jack Nicholson, he stops and realizes "I can't think of a thing to say... Fuck it!"
- Homage Derailment: In the climax of the film, Chucky goes after Glen, Tiffany, and Jennifer Tilly in the hospital. He slashes a hole in the wall with an axe, puts his face in it, and is about to say "Here's Johnny" from The Shining. All he said was "I can't think of a thing to say. Fuck it!"
- House Squatting: The dolls take up residence in the attic of Jennifer Tilly's mansion. With the intention of taking over the mansion later on.
- Hypocritical Humor: Chucky complains that killing isn't something you shouldn't have to hide in the closet. Night comes, and then Chucky reveals he was keeping three more dead bodies in a closet.
- Hypocrisy Nod: Tiffany after she denigrates Chucky for his serial killing spree gets her own murder of Redman exposed, and she defends herself that she did it as catharsis because "Rome wasn't built in a day!"
- I Choose to Stay: Chucky near the end of the movie states that he wants to stay in the doll body and keep around Tiffany and Glen/Glenda as a family and derides human biology since "you get old and sick".
- If I Can't Have You…: When Tiffany decides to dump Chucky and take Glen with her, he kills Tiffany with a fire axe.
- If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: Glen realizes this after he's killed Chucky being angry about Tiffany (his mother) supposedly dying, and regrets it showing nothing but remorse.
- In the Style of: With its campy tongue-in-the-cheek morbidity mixed in a cocktail of Gorn, Squick and a moment of female nudity Fan Disservice accompanied by Pino Donaggio's Richard Band-like music score, it can give off a vibe if this entry in the Killer Doll film series was directed by Stuart Gordon instead of the creator of the Killer Doll himself Don Mancini.
- Jekyll & Hyde: Glen is Jekyll and Glenda is Hyde.
- Last Request: As Tiffany dies from Chucky's ax attack, she tells Glen...Tiffany: Be a good girl.. or boy, or whatever. Don't make the same mistakes your mom and dad made.... especially your dad.
- Mind Screw: Watch it a few times. Most of it still won't make much sense.Chucky: Everybody just SHUT UP!!! I have had it! That's it! There is a limit to how much I can take! Look around you, Tiff! This is nuts! And I have a very high tolerance for nuts.
- Mood Whiplash: The movie revels in this trope.(On killing Redman)
Tiffany: (sobbing) It was just a little slip! Rome wasn't built in a day, you know? (abruptly harsh) Besides, the fucker really had it coming. - My God, What Have I Done?:
- Tiffany when she realizes she's just gutted Redman in front of Glen. She nearly breaks into tears when Chucky finds out.
- Glen, after he kills his father, Chucky.
- Off with His Head!:
- Tony Gardner gets murdered when Chucky and Tiffany wrap a wire around his neck and yank on it, slicing his head off.
- Chucky as well when Glen hacks him up.
- Oh, Crap!:
- Jennifer Tilly when she notices the "prop" head she's messing around with is bleeding.
- Chucky and Tiffany when they meet Glenda.
- EVERYONE when Chucky delivers a Big "SHUT UP!" cause they're all screaming at the same time.
- Playing Against Type: Jennifer tries to play the Virgin Mary in a Bible epic. Directed by Redman!
- Porn Stash: To help Tiffany in impregnating Jennifer Tilly, Chucky selects through several magazines, none of which particularly interest him... until he picks up an issue of Fangoria. Then the evil doll starts masturbating until he fills his cup full of semen.
- Questionable Casting: Parodied. Redman (the rap star) is directing a Bible epic, and Jennifer Tilly is lobbying for the part of the Virgin Mary.Jennifer: But the character is pregnant!
Redman: Yeah, I know, but I have a very specific vision of Mary. And what can I say? She gots to be hot. - Red-Flag Recreation Material: when Chucky is trying to fill a cup with his seed, he looks through a bunch of porn mags and none of them interest him, but then he finds an issue of Fangoria (a horror magazine) and is able to... get the job done.
- Revenge Before Reason: Tiffany knows and saw for herself what an Ax-Crazy serial killer Chucky is and yet boldly tried breaking up with him for refusing to go through with their initial plan of taking over Jennifer Tilly and Stan's lives.
- Self-Deprecation: When Tiffany hears that Jennifer is sleeping with Redman to get the part (not that Tiffany is also played by Jennifer).Tiffany: "Oh my God! She's a complete slut!"
- Shout-Out:
- Chucky's line upon meeting Glen, "It looks like he fell off the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down!" is taken almost directly from the film True Romance.
- Tiffany and Chucky call their gender-confused child Glen and Glenda respectively, a shout-out to the Ed Wood film, Glen or Glenda.
- Chucky hacks through a door with an ax exactly like Jack from The Shining, but the shout-out is comically subverted.
- The fact that Glen's female persona Glenda being evil is a nod to Brian De Palma's early thriller works such as Dressed to Kill and Sisters. Writer-director Don Mancini admitted having a large influence from De Palma and the movie's unique shot composition and cinematography really show this. And the composer of this movie is De Palma's regular collaborator and composer Pino Donaggio.
- So Proud of You: Chucky to Glen at the end, right before Glen kills him.
- Subverted Punchline: Chucky homages The Shining's famous "Here's Johnny" scene, but can't think of anything to say with it. The punchline that was clearly being set up was "Here's Chucky".
- Take That!: At Britney Spears.Chucky: (after killing her) Oops, I did it again!
- Taking the Bullet: When Tiffany breaks up with Chucky, he tries to kill Jennifer Tilly so that Tiffany can't possess her. Instead, Stan takes it.
- Taking the Kids: As Tiffany decides to break up with Chucky, she claims she is taking their child.
- Trailers Always Spoil: Inverted, as the trailers insist, for seemingly no reason, that Britney Spears does not appear in it. In fact, she is in it and Chucky kills her.
- A True Story in My Universe:
- The Chucky and Tiffany dolls have even been converted into animatronics playing themselves an in-universe Child's Play movie called Chucky Goes Psycho based on urban legends about a serial killer possessing a doll. and the human version of Tiffany is played by the actress, Jennifer Tilly who voices her and played her human form in Bride of Chucky.
- During the Time Skip at the end of the movie after Tiffany has possessed Tilly's body, a poster for Seed Of Chucky can be seen, implying that Tiffany might have starred in an in-universe.
- Villainous Breakdown: Chucky after Tiffany breaks up with him out of spite for refusing to help her possess Jennifer Tilly's life.
- We Are Not Going Through That Again: Tiffany decides that Jennifer must produce a human baby so that Glen can have a body to inhibit, declaring, "I'm not getting pregnant again!"
- What Have I Done: Glen after he hacks up his father Chucky.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Joan to Jennifer."You're prostituting yourself so you can play the Virgin Mary!"
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Post Despair Event Horizon, Glen briefly falls in this category, when his father, Chucky, kills his mother, Tiffany. He then goes berserk and violently kills Chucky.
- World of Jerkass: Even more so than the previous films, as the human leads do things that disgust even psycho serial killers Chucky and Tiffany especially with Jennifer and Redman's agreement that Jennifer gets a movie role by prostituting herself to the director.
- You Killed My Mother: Glen's reason for hacking Chucky to pieces.
