Pray Away (Film)

A Net Flix documentary directed by Kristine Stolakis and featuring multiple ex leaders of the now defunct gay conversion therapy organization Exodus. The film chronicles the rise and fall of the organization along with the personal lives of the ex-members featured within it, relating in great detail the inner workings of the organization, its tactics, and the harms caused both externally and to its supposedly reformed proponents.

The film contains examples of the following tropes

  • Cure Your Gays: To be expected as the film is about a gay conversion therapy organization.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Happens on behalf of John Paulk when he describes his visit to a Washington D.C. gay bar, which he made while being the chairman of Exodus and a very public advocate of conversion therapy. Needless to say the night ends with him being recognized and photographed as he attempted to make his getaway.
  • Gayngst: Almost goes without saying given the nature of Exodus. All of the interviewees discuss a multitude of negative feelings they experienced as a result of their sexualities and the beliefs of the community they were immersed in, special mention going to Julie Rodgers whose self-hatred lead to consistent self harm behavior.
  • Wedding Finale: The wedding of interviewee and former conversion therapy advocate Julie Rodgers to her fiancee Amanda Hite is the last shot of the film.
  • You Are What You Hate: Given the nature of Exodus as an organization, a large portion of its most prominent leaders, including all of the ones featured in the documentary, were gay or bisexual individuals who railed against the degeneracy and social ills supposedly associated with homosexuality.
