Out of the Blue is a 1980 film by Dennis Hopper and starring Linda Manz and Hopper himself. The film was inspired by Neil Young's song My my, Hey Hey (Out of the blue), hence its title.

It tells the story of C.B. a teenage girl with a passion for punk music and Elvis, growing up in a dysfunctional environment that soon gets worse as her father, Don, gets out of jail, where he was sent for hitting a schoolbus with his truck (wounding C.B in the process).

At first Don finds a job at the landfill, but soon loses it because of an outburst of bad temper at his boss, Anderson (whose son he killed in the accident). Don and his friend Charlie then decide to murder Anderson.

Meanwhile C.B. is skipping school and running away to a big city, getting backstage and on stage at a punk concert and provoking another car accident...

This film contains examples of:

  • Murder-Suicide: C.B. kills her parents and herself at the end of the film.
  • Only Known by Initials: C.B. is called by her initials. Her full name is Cindy Barnes.
  • The Runaway: The entire sequence where C.B runs off to the city, especially the part when a taxi driver she just met takes her to get high in a house filled with junkies and attempts to rape her.
  • Self-Made Orphan: C.B kills her parents at the end of the film.
