A 2006 Finnish-Chinese wuxia written and directed by Antti Jussi Annila inspired by the Finnish myth Kalevala, as the story is about the past haunting the present and a great hero emerging.

The movie stars Tommi Eronen, Markku Peltola, Zhang Jingchu, Elle Kull, Taiseng Cheng, and Hao Dang.

It was released on October 13, 2006.


Tropes for the film:

  • Adaptational Name Change: Eight of Loviatar's sons were named as diseases. Here they're named as Fear, Pain, Madness, Ugliness, Lust, Hate, Greed and Blindness.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: Pin Yu doesn't even consider Sintai's advances until he easily turns away her attacks. Only afterwards (with a bit of soul-searching) does she return his love. Also a subversion, Sintai's companion Cho turns out to be her long-lost lover, and she returns to him with only a token display of kung-fu.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Berg has dedicated his whole life to uncovering the secrets of the mysterious metal box and even says as his final words that he has nothing to lose. When Kai unlocks the box and Berg has a look inside, he's killed by the Last Son of the Nocktress who takes over his body.
  • Demonic Possession: When Kai opens the box, the demon takes over Berg's body while killing the real Berg in the process.
  • Losing Your Head: Sintai decapitates the demon, but the latter's head remains alive and is sealed in his father's metal box.
  • Sickly Green Glow: When Kai opens the Sampo, it releases to the sky a glowing green whirlwind that mesmerizes everyone expect for Kai, Berg and Ronja.
  • Tagline: "Forge me the Sampo and you will get your loved one back".
  • White Hair, Black Heart: When the demon appears in ancient China, he has an impossibly long white hair.
