Identificazione di una donna (Identification of a Woman in English) is a 1982 film by Michelangelo Antonioni featuring Tomas Milian.
The main character is Niccolò, an arthouse filmmaker who sets out for a search for an actress to play in his next film.
Identfication of some tropes:
- Author Avatar. In this movie Antonioni, for the first time in his career, makes the main character a film director.
- Distinction Without a Difference: The unknown man who warns Niccolò against meeting the woman called Mavi Luppis says that it is not a threat but a warning.
- Dutch Angle: In the very first shot the viewer sees what appears to be the wall with some carpet. However then the door opens from camera below and the viewer realises that the camera is set above the door and looks down. It shoots the character from above. The carpet is a rug on the floor.
- Harassing Phone Call: Niccolò receives the one in the beginning.
- The Hero: Niccolò.
- Hotter and Sexier: This film contains numerous examples of complete nudity. Its tone is generally sexier than in any of the previous Antonioni works.
- Only One Name: For everyone in this film except for those who are parents or called barkeeps. No-one is credited by both the name and the surname.
- Mavi Luppis is the subversion still according to The Other Wiki.
- Pop-Star Composer: Several of them. Some of the most actual artists of the early 80's worked on the movie
- The Quest: Niccolò searches for the actress for his next arthouse film. That's what the titular "Identificazione" or "Identification" stands for.
- Reunion Show: The first film Antonioni made in Italy in 18 years. Il mistero di Oberwald (1981) was also this but it was made for TV.
- Unnamed Parent: Both of Mavi's parents.
- The X of Y: Both in the English version and in the original name. Syntactically the formula "X di Y" is similar.
