High School is a Stoner Comedy film by John Stalberg Jr.
Henry Burke (Matt Bush) is a student at Morgan High School. He's top of his class, promising valedictorian, and a completely straight-laced model student. He's also a former friend of Travis Breaux (Sean Marquette), a stoner who seems poised to spend his life at society's bottom rung.
Well, it's nearing the end of the school year, and the finals are on. Henry is fretting about acing all the tests and passing, and his problems are made worse when, while swerving to avoid Travis' car, he knocks a rear view mirror off the car of principal Dr. Leslie Gordon (Michael Chiklis), resulting in him getting a huge fine, and detention. Travis has Henry smoke up a joint to help him relax... which results in Henry getting a black eye from walking into another student.
If that weren't enough, Dr. Gordon has decided to crack down on all the stoners in his school by instituting a drug screening. Anyone who tests positive for drugs gets immediate expulsion, which does NOT bode well for a still-high Henry. Luckily for him, Travis has the perfect plan... get everyone in the school high so everyone fails the exam, which will get all the results thrown out. Stealing from local drug dealer from Psycho Ed (Adrien Brody), the two bake it into a batch of brownies that they swap for the ones at the school bake sale. Soon enough, everyone in the school eats the brownies, and get baked like potatoes. Of course, it wouldn't be a comedy movie if there weren't a whole lot of antics and shenanigans to keep Henry and Travis on their toes.
The movie was released on January 24th, 2010.
High School contains examples of:
- Dean Bitterman: Dr. Leslie Gordon. He has zero love for students who do drugs, like Travis. He's also sexually harassing his secretary.
- Double-Meaning Title: High School. It's set in a High School... and everyone in it gets high.
- Face Doodling: Travis' first scene has him sleeping while Big Dave and Little Dave write "loser", play a Tic-Tac-Toe game, and draw a moustache and penis, on his face.
- High School: Morgan High School.
- Meaningful Name:
- Psycho Ed. He doesn't like when his his drugs are stolen, and very threateningly confronts Henry and Ed about it.
- Paranoid. Best exemplified by his introductory scene.
Travis: Yo, why do they call you Paranoid?Paranoid: What? Why you wanna know, man?! - Mister Muffykins: Psycho Ed's security system for his stash is a little poofy black dog.
- Shout-Out:
- In Psycho Ed's home, some people are seen watching Evil Dead 2.
- The jar of drugs that Henry takes from Psycho Ed is labelled Captain Sulu.
- Spelling Bee: The movie starts at one, with student Charlyne Phuc getting high before being asked to spell "logorrhea".
- The Stoner: Travis, big Dave, little Dave... oh, and Psycho Ed and his friends.
- Unfortunate Name: Say it with me. Charlyne Phuc.
- Waving Signs Around: There are people outside the school doing this because they don't like Dr. Gordon's decision to drug test the students.
