Gun Fury is a 1953 3-D American Western film directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Rock Hudson and Donna Reed, with major supporting roles for Philip Carey and Leo Gordon. The film is based on the novel Ten Against Caesar by Kathleen B. George and Robert A. Granger. The supporting cast includes Lee Marvin and Neville Brand.

After a stagecoach holdup, Frank Slayton's notorious gang leave Ben Warren for dead and head off with his fiancée. Warren follows, and although none of the townspeople he comes across are prepared to help, he recruits two others who have sworn revenge on the ruthless Slayton.

  • Bad Guy Bar: Pedro runs a cantina on the Mexico/Arizona border where he buys stolen goods and sells guns to bandits and outlaws on both sides of the border. Slayton's gang holes up there overnight, and Jess tells Ben Pedro has too many gunmen on his payroll to risk attacking it.
  • Bathe Her and Bring Her to Me: Frank Slayton has the whores at Pedro's ranch bathe Jennifer before he comes to her room and forces himself on her.
  • Circling Vultures: After Jess objects to Slayton abducting Jennifer and prevents him from raping her, Slayton leaves him tied to a post for the circling vultures: telling him he'll maybe last 24 hours.
  • Clothing Damage: Slayton rips the sleeve off Jennifer's blouse while attempting to force her to change clothes.
  • Conveniently Timed Attack from Behind: After their fistfight, Frank Slayton grabs his dropped gun and aims it at Ben Warren. Slayton pauses to mock Warren for never having shot a man and tells him how easy it is. Just as he finishes speaking, the gun falls from his hand and he keels forward with Johash's knife sticking out of his back.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: Slayton's gang disguise themselves as the U.S. Cavalry escort in order to rob the stagecoach.
  • Ghost Town: Just short of the Mexican border, the gang is forced to take shelter in a ghost town. Johash's skill with a sniper rifle cuts off their only escape route, as three gang members find out.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Frank Slayton kidnaps Jennifer Ballard after shooting her fiance because she comes from Atlanta and reminds him of when he used to be a Southern Gentleman. He drags her along with him over his gang's objections, and it is implied he rapes her.
  • Meek Townsman: Twice in his pursuit of Frank Slayton's gang, Ben Warren stops in towns in an attempt to raise a Posse to help him, only to be met by fear and indifference from the townsmen.
  • Left for Dead: Ben Warren is left for dead by the Slayton gang after he is shot and falls off the runaway stagecoach.
  • Motive Decay: An In-Universe example. Jess complains to Frank Slayton that initially their gang only attacked carpetbaggers. Then it was anyone who had something they needed. Then it was Indians. And now it seems to be anyone. Slayton does not respond well to the criticism.
  • Police Are Useless: After the Slayton gang robs the stagecoach, kills the passengers and kidnaps his fiancée, Ben Warren rides to the nearest town to inform The Sheriff and raise a Posse. However, the sheriff refuses to help because the crime didn't happen in his county (and because of his fear of the Slayton gang).
  • The Remnant: Frank Slayton's gang is made up of former members of the Army of Northern Virginia. Slayton tells Jennifer that, unlike for her fiance Ben Warren, for him the war never ended.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: When Slayton finds out that Jess is riding with Ben in pursuit of him, he makes Ben an offer: he'll return Ben's fiancée Jennifer is Jess rejoins him. Ben and Jess agree to the deal and Jess returns to Slayton expecting to be welcomed with open arms, only for Slayton to gun him down.
  • Run for the Border: After they rob the stagecoach, Frank Layton and his gang head for the Mexican border, unaware that Ben Warren has survived and is coming after them.
  • Southern Gentleman: Frank Slayton used to be an officer in the Army of Northern Virginia, and still fancies himself as a southern gentleman. However, he becomes increasingly paranoid and murders three of his own gang for various real and imagined offenses.
  • Spicy Latina: Slayton's girlfriend Estella is a hotblooded Mexican fireball who attacks the hostage Jennifer because she thinks Slayton is about her for her.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After being trapped in the Ghost Town, two of Slayton's gang decide to grab two of the saddlebags and make a run for it: straight into Johash's gun sights.
  • Trampled Underfoot: After he betrays the gang, Slayton has Curly staked out in the desert and then the gang ride their their horse over him.
  • What a Drag: After Curly tries to betray the gang and ride off with Jennifer, Doc ropes him and drags him out of the river across the rocks before staking him out in the desert.
